About The Position

This is a position with the ITS/UNI Network Engineering team. This position provides technical support in the design, implementation, administration, and monitoring of the campus network infrastructure, including routers, switches, firewalls, VPN appliances, network controllers, and related systems that support LSU’s faculty, staff, and students. Under the guidance of senior network engineers, this position assists with troubleshooting, maintaining, and improving network services and participates in projects to deploy and support network technologies.

Requirements

  • Engineer 1- Bachelors Degree 1 year of related experience Examples of work Network Engineer 1: Responds to basic incidents via ticketing systems and responds to user inquiries via email using good communication skills. Monitors overall health of the network including availability, utilization, and performance. Corrects basic issues. Reports more advanced issues to peers or upper management as needed. Demonstrates a basic understanding of network protocols including Ethernet, TCP/IP, spanning tree, DHCP, DNS, ARP, static routing, SNMP, NTP, 802.1q, etc in order to configure.
  • Engineer 2- Bachelor's Degree 2 years of related experience. Examples of work Network Engineer 2: Writes more advanced and comprehensive technical documents and is involved in the overall organization of documentation. Takes initiative to develop new documentation and recognizes when new documentation is needed and creates new knowledge-based articles, wiki articles, etc. Deploys more advanced network devices such as routers, security appliances, layer 3 switches, etc. Demonstrates a proficient understanding of control plan policing, network virtualization +LSU values skills, experience, and expertise. Candidates who have relevant experience in key job responsibilities are encouraged to apply— a degree is not required as long as the candidate meets the required years of experience specified in the job description.

Responsibilities

  • Engineer 1- Design: Consults with engineers, analysts, customers, and other stakeholders to gather requirements and assist in the design of network solutions that meet business needs. Designs and builds lab and test environments to simulate and validate network configurations. Documents requirements, engineering drawings, and network diagrams to support implementation and operations. Designs and implements network services and infrastructure in accordance with established standards to ensure systems are secure, highly available, and scalable. Actively develops knowledge of current and emerging networking technologies. (30%)
  • Operations: Configures, installs, maintains, and supports network hardware and software, including switches, routers, wireless access points, and firewalls. Monitors link performance, availability, and reliability and analyzes operational data to support system performance. Applies networking principles, practices, and procedures to troubleshoot and resolve network issues. Performs site surveys, data collection, and technical preparation activities for network infrastructure projects. Supports DHCP, DNS, IP address management, and routing protocols as part of normal network operations. (30%)
  • Support: Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with customers, engineers, analysts, and other LSU stakeholders. Provides technical support and troubleshooting for network-related issues. Participates in responding to alerts generated by monitoring systems and escalates complex problems as appropriate. Assists in the creation and maintenance of technical and support documentation for internal use. Works collaboratively in a team environment to deliver reliable network services. (30%)

  • Engineer 2- Design: Consults with engineers, analysts, customers, and other stakeholders to gather requirements and design enterprise-level network solutions that support complex business and academic needs. Designs and builds advanced lab and test environments to validate and optimize network architectures. Documents architectural designs, engineering drawings, and detailed network diagrams that support enterprise services. Designs and implements secure, highly available, and scalable network infrastructure across core, edge, border, and datacenter environments in alignment with established architectural standards. (40%)
  • Operations: Deploys, configures, manages, and supports enterprise network hardware and software across a geographically dispersed environment. Monitors and analyzes performance, capacity, and reliability metrics to identify and resolve issues in a timely manner. Applies advanced networking principles, protocols, and best practices—including routing, switching, wireless, and security—to troubleshoot complex network problems. Uses automation techniques and tools to improve efficiency, consistency, and reliability of network operations. Supports technologies including NAC, AAA, IPAM, and dynamic routing protocols. (25%)
  • Support: Serves as a technical escalation point for complex network issues and outages, working directly with staff and customers to restore services. Responds to alerts generated by enterprise monitoring systems and reacts appropriately. Participates in change management processes to ensure network changes are planned, tested, and implemented safely. Cross-trains and provides technical guidance to junior staff and other university personnel. Maintains accurate documentation and protects the confidentiality of sensitive network and institutional information. (25%)
