About The Position

The Network Operations Specialist is responsible for monitoring, maintaining, and optimizing communications and control system infrastructure across IPX’s portfolio of utility-scale solar and battery energy storage (BESS) assets. This role focuses on SCADA systems, network reliability, remote connectivity, and cybersecurity coordination to ensure high availability of monitoring and control systems. This position partners closely with Site Operations, Asset Management, Compliance, third-party O&M providers, telecom vendors, and IT teams to support safe, reliable, and compliant asset operations.

Requirements

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Network Engineering, Cybersecurity, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Automation, or a related field
  • Certifications (in progress or completed) are a plus: CompTIA Network+ or Security+ Cisco CCNA Palo Alto Networks PCCSA / PCNSA Check Point CCSA ISA/IEC 62443 awareness or industrial networking training
  • 1-3 years of experience in network engineering, IT/OT systems, or industrial technology (internships/co-ops welcome)
  • Solid understanding of networking fundamentals, including: IP addressing and subnetting VLANs and trunking Routing and switching basics Network protocols (TCP/IP, ARP, ICMP, etc.)
  • Familiarity with industrial control environments or a strong interest in learning about SCADA, PLCs, RTUs, and HMI systems
  • Comfortable with CLI-based configuration of routers and switches (Cisco, Hirschmann, etc.) or have relevant lab/simulated experience
  • Exposure to cybersecurity principles in OT or critical infrastructure environments (network segmentation, firewall basics, remote access)
  • Ability to read and interpret network diagrams, cable schedules, and topology maps
  • Willingness to travel to remote energy sites (e.g., wind farms, solar fields, substations)
  • Strong troubleshooting, documentation, and communication skills
  • Able to work independently and as part of a cross-functional OT/engineering team
  • Ability to pass background checks for access to regulated energy sites

Nice To Haves

  • Internship or academic project involving: SCADA networks Cisco, Palo Alto, or industrial switches Fieldbus or serial-to-IP conversions
  • Exposure to or interest in OT/ICS protocols: Modbus TCP DNP3 OPC UA/DA IEC 61850
  • Basic understanding of network monitoring and diagnostic tools (e.g., Wireshark, SolarWinds, PRTG, etc.)
  • Familiarity with: Network segmentation and the Purdue Model Firewalls and NAT (especially Palo Alto or Check Point) Industrial media types (fiber, serial, copper)

Responsibilities

  • Monitor SCADA systems and network health across operating renewable energy assets.
  • Troubleshoot communications issues between inverters, BESS systems, meters, RTUs, and central control platforms.
  • Maintain and support routers, switches, firewalls, and VPN tunnels for secure remote connectivity.
  • Coordinate with telecom providers and third-party vendors to resolve outages and latency issues.
  • Support configuration and maintenance of network infrastructure including VLANs, IP addressing, and routing.
  • Ensure high uptime of monitoring platforms such as PowerFactors, AlsoEnergy, or similar systems.
  • Assist with cybersecurity protocols and collaborate with IT teams on OT/IT integration.
  • Support compliance initiatives related to network documentation, access controls, and audit readiness.
  • Track and document incidents, perform root cause analysis, and implement corrective actions.
  • Participate in commissioning and integration of new solar and BESS assets into the network environment.
