About The Position

Be a part of a world-class academic health-care system at UChicago Medicine as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist in Orland Park The Nuclear Medicine Technologist performs nuclear medicine procedures as assigned and applies principles of radiation protection. The Nuclear Medicine Technologist exercises professional judgment in the performance of procedures and provides necessary patient care during the course of procedures.

Requirements

  • Requires satisfactory completion of formal Nuclear Medicine technology training in an AMA approved school.
  • Requires eligibility for registry by American Registry of Radiologic Technologists or certification by the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board.
  • Requires eligibility for “Active” IDNS accreditation in the category of Nuclear Medicine Technology.

Responsibilities

  • Has knowledge of and utilizes appropriate patient care protocol relating to the physical and psychological needs of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent and geriatric patients.
  • Performs nuclear medicine procedures as assigned.
  • Selects proper technical factors for each exam, including: collimator, pulse height analyzer settings, analog and computer acquisition parameters, image intensity setting.
  • Operates equipment according to manufacturer and UCH procedures.
  • Utilizes Radiology Information System (MARS) to record exam status.
  • Prepares radiopharmaceuticals for administration.
  • Properly positions patients for exams.
  • Administers radiopharmaceuticals to patients by prescribed route using aseptic technique.
  • Performs vein puncture and places IV catheters as needed for procedures.
  • Obtains all views/images/positions outlined by UCH protocol.
  • Ensures that films are labeled with patient's name and medical history number; day number; date of exam; view(s); radiopharmaceutical and dose; and acquisition parameters.
  • Evaluates procedure results for technical quality before submitting for initial review by physician.
  • Presents previous exam(s), when available, with current exam for initial review by physician.
  • Works independently in assigned area as required.
  • Regards safety of patients as a priority in performance of study.
  • Practices radiation protection techniques to minimize radiation exposure to patient and co-workers.
  • Handles patients in conformance with all established safety procedures.
  • Uses equipment in accordance with manufacture specifications.
  • Recognizes patient conditions requiring immediate action and initiates life support measures when necessary.
  • Communicates with patients and customers in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Explains preparation and exam procedure to patient.
  • Is aware of and responsive to physical and psychological needs of patients under his/her care.
  • Maintains equipment in good working condition.
  • Reports malfunctioning equipment to Imaging Care Center Leader.
  • Keeps equipment and work area clean and neat.
  • Maintains an adequate inventory of all necessary supplies
  • Participates in continuing education programs to maintain and upgrade technical skills.
  • Attends sufficient approved continuing education courses to maintain accreditation by IDNS and professional registry.
  • Contributes to training of student technologists.
  • Performs other duties as requested by senior management.
