AMI will be assisting in providing medical staff to the Syracuse VAMC in Syracuse, NY to help deliver compassionate and quality healthcare to patients in the area. AMI is seeking a skilled and dedicated part-time/PRN Nuclear Medicine Technologist to provide diagnostic and therapeutic nuclear medicine services to veterans at the Syracuse VA Medical Center. This position requires advanced technical expertise in nuclear medicine imaging, radiopharmaceutical handling, patient safety, and strict compliance with VA policies, radiation safety standards, and regulatory requirements.

  • Must be able to successfully complete the AMI Credentialing Process.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite applications
  • Active, full, and unrestricted state license as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist (any U.S. state or territory).
  • Certification by the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) or ARRT (RT[N]).
  • Minimum three (3) years of recent nuclear medicine experience performing the types of exams required at the Syracuse VAMC.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of radiopharmaceutical preparation, radiation physics, instrumentation, anatomy, and patient care.
  • Must be able to work in a safe manner following all safety rules and regulations.

  • Deliver targeted, culturally appropriate information to help individuals and groups understand health promotion and disease prevention information, policies, regulations, and local code.

Responsibilities

  • Perform a full range of nuclear medicine diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in accordance with established protocols and physician orders.
  • Prepare, calculate, and administer radiopharmaceuticals and non-radioactive pharmaceuticals accurately and safely.
  • Conduct nuclear medicine studies including, but not limited to: Bone scans and bone marrow studies Cardiac stress imaging Brain scans GI bleed scans and gastric emptying studies HIDA scans Lung ventilation and perfusion studies Liver, spleen, thyroid, parathyroid, and hemangioma imaging CSF leak studies Octreotide imaging Metastatic surveys Iodine-131 diagnostic and therapeutic procedures (inpatient and outpatient)
  • Screen and prepare patients for procedures by verifying identity, explaining exams, assessing contraindications, and ensuring patient comfort and safety.
  • Monitor patients during examinations, recognize abnormal physical or emotional responses, and immediately notify the physician of adverse reactions or clinical concerns.
  • Operate nuclear medicine imaging equipment and evaluate images for diagnostic quality, accuracy, and completeness prior to transmission to PACS.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and exam records in CPRS/VistA, including procedure details, radiopharmaceutical doses, delays, and clinical notes when exams cannot be completed as scheduled.
  • Adhere to all radiation safety regulations, including VA National Health Physics Program guidelines and ALARA principles.
  • Perform routine quality control checks on imaging equipment and report malfunctions or safety issues promptly.
  • Maintain infection control standards and ensure proper cleaning and disinfection of equipment and work areas.
  • Participate in after-hours, weekend, holiday, and on-call coverage in accordance with Diagnostic Imaging Service policies.
  • Communicate professionally and courteously with veterans, family members, providers, and staff, maintaining high ethical and customer service standards.
