About The Position

Function as a health care provider and manager in the school setting and implement and maintain a comprehensive health program that advocates for the health rights of children and promotes an optimal level of wellness for the students, staff, and community

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree with a minimum of three years nursing experience or Associate Degree in nursing with a minimum of five years nursing experience, pediatrics or school nursing preferred
  • Current license to practice professional nursing in the State of Texas
  • Current BLS Healthcare Provider CPR certification
  • Certification in vision, hearing, scoliosis, and acanthosis screening preferred, but training is provided

Responsibilities

  • Identifies, plans, intervenes, and evaluates student health concerns, including physical and mental health needs and injuries.
  • Maintains, evaluates, and interprets cumulative health data to accommodate individual needs of students.
  • Possesses strong communication and intervention skills.
  • Possesses strong physical assessment skills with the ability to evaluate health and safety measures in the school environment.
  • Provides health assessments, including screenings, for health factors impacting student education. This includes mandated screenings such as vision, hearing, scoliosis, and acanthosis.
  • Provides chronic disease management and education, including training and supervising designated school personnel to perform specialized procedures which serve the needs of children with disabilities and/or health conditions in the school setting.
  • Promotes and assists in the control of communicable diseases through immunization programs, early intervention, surveillance, reporting, and follow-up of contagious diseases.
  • Directly and indirectly provides health education, health resources, and curriculum recommendations.
  • Participates as the health specialist on school teams and promotes a healthy school environment conducive to learning.
  • Provides health counseling for staff and provides leadership and/or support for staff wellness programs.
  • Coordinates school/community health activities and serves as liaison between school, community, and health care providers.
  • Assists the Health Services Department with developing, evaluating, and revising health policies, procedures, goals, and objectives for the school district, in order to continually improve the quality of health services in Katy ISD.
  • Utilizes equipment and technology for the delivery of health care services.
  • RN will be responsible for the direct supervision o f a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) i f an LVN is assigned to their campus.
