About The Position

Summer 2026 Nurse Extern Program @ Ingalls Memorial Hospital Full-time, Day Shift Available 8-week Summer Nurse Externship program, Monday, June 15th- August 7th, 2026 In conjunction with the University of Chicago Medicine’s mission to provide superior health care, the mission of the Nurse Extern Program is to provide exceptional professional development for students completing their last year in an ADN, BSN, or direct entry MSN program. The focus of the nurse externship program will include Medical/Surgical, Adult ICU, Emergency Department and Rehab. The Nurse Extern is a nursing student who provides patient care under the direction of a registered nurse. The Nurse Extern provides care to patients and their families by assuming defined patient care responsibilities and by performing specific clinical skills appropriate to the role. (Assumes responsibilities in accordance with CA job description). Attends educational offerings as required. Functions as a safety attendant when necessary. In this 8-week summer intensive program, students will be matched with one area for the duration of the Nurse Externship program. We are looking for candidates that have a passion to work for Ingalls Memorial! Following the summer nursing externship, there will be an opportunity to continue to work during your last year of school. The schedule will be flexible to work with your school schedule. Requirements

  • Successful Completion of one year of a two-year Associate Degree or Diploma program or in the second semester of the third year in a Baccalaureate program
  • BLS (CPR) AHA
  • Request 2 professional reference letters prior to the interview - one letter is required from a nursing instructor
  • Copy of most recent transcript
  • Must be a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)
  • You must hold a 3.0 GPA or higher

  • All required documents are due prior to your scheduled interview
  • Candidates need to be available for Three, 12-hour shifts for the full duration of the 8-week program
  • Positions will include Day shift opportunities.
  • Candidates will be expected to work some weekends

Responsibilities

  • Performs A.M. and P.M. cares as assigned or requested
  • Bathes patients and makes beds as assigned or requested
  • Takes vital signs as assigned or requested and reports to Staff Nurse
  • Ambulates, lifts and positions patients according to policy and procedure
  • Assist patients with elimination needs and appropriate measurement
  • Distributes meals and feeds patients
  • Weighs patients according to plan of care at times ordered and reports to Staff Nurse
  • Assist w/transfers patients with belongings appropriately labeled as according to policy
  • Collects, accurately labels and transports specimens according to policy records vital signs, blood glucose, intake and output according to policy on appropriate form
  • Follows safety policies to ensure patient, public, co-workers, and self-well-being
  • Transports patients; use equipment on Nursing Unit safely
  • Maintains orderly work environment by straightening patient rooms; disposes of body fluids according to infection control policies
  • Always presents a positive image of the hospital
  • Always treat patients, visitors, physicians, and staff with care, concern, and courtesy
  • Responds quickly and appropriately to customer requests
  • Demonstrates the hospital's quality philosophy by fulfilling all commitments accurately the first time
  • Always maintains strict confidentiality; works cooperatively within department and with other areas
  • Meets staffing needs with flexibility
  • Responds quickly to requests for assistance
  • Reports to work on time, as scheduled
