5 East is a surgical critical care unit that specializes in the care of patients with life-threatening neurological diagnoses and/or trauma related injuries that require surgical intervention. The unit staff is comprised of RNs, nurse technicians, critical care technicians, and clinical assistants and is led by an Administrative Clinical Manager, an Associate Clinical Manager on the off-shift, and a Nurse in Professional Development Specialist. The staff on 5 East are supported by surgical intensivists, neurosurgeons, and Advanced Practice Providers who provide 24/7 coverage. Recognized by U.S. News & World Report as the #2 hospital in Michigan and one of the top hospitals in the country. It is a major academic and referral center with Level I adult and Level II pediatric trauma designations. The advanced capabilities and clinical expertise within this center have earned it Magnet designation four consecutive times and has the distinct honor of housing Michigan’s first Diagnostic Imaging Center of Excellence. Under supervision of a Nurse and following hospital policies and procedures, performs various nursing care tasks and treatments on assigned patients. Performs routine bedside nursing activities including bathing and personal grooming of patients; ambulating, moving and turning patients; assisting patients with bedpans or urinary devices; making patient beds and caring for personal property. Assists in performing additional nursing procedures such as catheterizations, suctioning, irrigating colostomies, applying restraints, giving enemas, douches and sitz baths or pericare.
