About The Position

NURSING INSTRUCTOR (ADN) SUMMARY The Nursing Instructor is responsible for instructing students, organizing the curriculum, overseeing classroom management, tracking the progress of each student, and keeping accurate records/files on each student in the classes he or she teaches.The instructor also must abide by the policies and standards of Valley College, ACCSC, WV RN Board and any other regulatory/accrediting organization. RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES 1. Nursing Instructor (On Campus Only) (Also referred to as Primary Instructor) Ensure that the course syllabus for each course the Nursing Instructor teaches includes the course title, lecture/lab/clinical hour breakdown, course description, course learning objectives, method of instruction, course instructions, instructor professional bio, assessment methods, bio information on additional instructors that will participate in the delivery of the course, textbook(s) and supporting student resources, and location of the class is accurate prior to the start of class. Develop lesson plans that include lecture and/or lab delivery methods, assignments/activities, homework and evaluation tools for assigned classes as designated by the college provided curriculum. Instruct and guide students in the classroom and/or lab learning environment, as designated by the college provided curriculum. Demonstrate procedures/processes and operate/demonstrate the use of appropriate equipment as designated by the curriculum. Grade and evaluate students' work in a timely manner and provide constructive feedback. Assist and tutor students with areas of the curriculum with which they are having difficulty. Keep accurate and up to date progress reports on students' work. Compile reports/updates on students as required. Provide telephone and/or email follow-up with students as requested. Maintain a cooperative and professional learning environment. If designated for clinical work site instruction, the Nursing Instructor is responsible for the supervision of students while they are at their clinical (off-site) experience as per the rules and regulations set by their program and the West Virginia Board of Nursing. 2. Course Development Conduct on-going evaluation of course material as outlined in the Valley College Nursing program bylaws. Participate in the selection of books and materials; and Maintain student handouts, tests, assignments, and course syllabus as directed by the Program Administrator. At the conclusion of each course, faculty shall: Compare the number of planned clinical hours as established in the syllabus with the number of clinical hours actually provided to students. Results should be reported to the Nursing Program Administrator with any supporting comments/explanation. Compare the number of planned laboratory hours as established in the syllabus with the number of laboratory hours provided to students and report the data to the administrator. Provide data to the Nursing Program Administrator that is reported to the WV Board of Nursing in the Annual Report is to be reported on a specific chart that includes that contains the name of the course, date range the course was taught, faculty name, number of clinical hours planned, and the actual number of clinical and/or laboratory hours provided to the students. 3. Professional Development Develop a professional development (self-development and professional growth plan) Provide support documentation that demonstrates the professional development plan has been executed. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY Direct Report: ADN Program Administrator Secondary Report: Interim Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs WORK ENVIRONMENT This job operates in an academic classroom setting. It is an onsite position. TRAVEL This position is expected to have occasional travel. PHYSICAL DEMANDS This role requires regular communication, close vision, and focus adjustment. Duties include standing for up to 4 hours, lifting to 50 lbs., and daily typing. Employees must follow job-specific procedures and operate equipment per curriculum guidelines. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions. POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK This is a full-time salary position. The days and hours of work are Monday - Friday, 40 hours per week. The traditional work is Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand. REQUIREMENTS - ACADEMIC, LICENSING AND PRIOR WORK EXPERIENCE All incumbents must have the ability to express ideas in a clear, concise and motivating manner and employ effective questioning techniques to encourage students to pursue their own answers. They must have the ability and organizational skills necessary to maintain an accurate tracking system and be able to establish a disciplined learning environment. The instructor must maintain confidentiality of student information and records. Master's Degree in Nursing and education experienced preferred. (or hold a bachelor's degree with a major in nursing and be enrolled in a graduate degree program with a major in nursing within one year of employment as a faculty member; or have a bachelor's degree with a major in nursing and at least 10 years of direct patient care experience in nursing). ACCSC requires that the faculty member has four years of practical work experience that does not include teaching experience. Current, valid licensure as a Registered Nurse in West Virginia. Valley College will verify prior work experience, license, and education background.
