About The Position

POSITION OVERVIEW: Assists the Director of Nursing in planning, organizing, developing, and directing the day-to-day operations of the Nursing Department during evening hours. Ensures all nursing activities are carried out in accordance with facility policies, as well as current federal, state, and local regulations governing long-term care facilities.

Requirements

  • Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Health Professions.
  • Current CPR certification (must be obtained within 30 days of hire if not already certified).
  • Three to five (3–5) years of nursing experience, preferably in a long-term care setting.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Ability to remain calm, professional, and composed in complex or challenging situations.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks, make decisions, delegate responsibilities, and manage multiple objectives and deadlines effectively.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally with residents, families, staff, vendors, and other stakeholders both inside and outside the facility.
  • Demonstrates patience, empathy, and a positive attitude toward older adults, with a genuine commitment to serving the community and enhancing residents’ quality of life.
  • Ability to stand, walk, sit, stoop, bend, and reach for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift up to 20 pounds frequently (up to 66% of the time spent in performance of duties) and up to 35 pounds occasionally (up to 33% of the time spent in performance of duties).
  • Manual dexterity that allows grasping, carrying and holding equipment and supplies or for resident care as needed to perform tasks.
  • Ability to see, hear, verbally communicate, and distinguish odors in the performance of duties.
  • Requires a satisfactory general background check, including state and local criminal history checks, as well as a satisfactory drug screening.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise, direct, and support nursing department staff, fostering a cohesive and motivated team.
  • Initiate and implement constructive discipline and performance evaluations in accordance with facility policies.
  • Manage absentee call-ins and staffing adjustments per facility policy.
  • Conduct routine rounds to assess residents’ needs, ensure quality of care, and verify that nursing staff perform duties according to established standards and resident care plans.
  • Implement, coordinate, and supervise compliance with resident care programs, including incident and accident reporting, infection control, wound care, and medication management (including Coumadin).
  • Ensure that all admissions and re-admissions are processed in compliance with federal, state, local, and facility policies.
  • Review daily unit reports, coordinate nursing services, and ensure care plan interventions are appropriately executed.
  • Review resident medical records and nurses’ notes to verify accuracy, completeness, and compliance with resident care standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Address clinical issues, participate in physician rounds, and obtain and follow up on physician orders as needed.
  • Develop, review, and maintain individualized resident care plans, ensuring goals, interventions, and responsibilities are clearly defined and communicated to all personnel involved.
  • Serve as the primary contact for residents and their families during evening hours, addressing concerns, complaints, or grievances and escalating when appropriate.
  • Ensure CNA documentation is accurate and complete, providing one-on-one education as needed.
  • Oversee compliance with medication administration, storage, and control policies for all licensed nurses, including observation of medication passes and treatment schedules.
  • Provide direct nursing care and support on units as necessary.
  • Participate in on-call rotations as directed.
  • Perform administrative tasks including medical report completion, evaluations, charting, and other documentation as required.
  • Inspect nursing service areas daily (stations, medication rooms, supply areas) to ensure cleanliness, safety, and compliance with infection control standards.
  • Attend mandatory in-service trainings and departmental or facility meetings.
  • Ensure facility staff adhere to all policies, procedures, and applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Maintain HIPAA compliance, protecting resident and patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Foster positive relationships with staff, residents, and families, modeling professionalism, calmness, and supportive leadership.
  • Assist nursing administration in disseminating information regarding resident rights, facility policies, and updates to federal, state, OSHA, CDC, and other regulations.
  • Ensure facility security according to established schedules.
  • Assist with administration and documentation of TB screenings, seasonal vaccinations (influenza, pneumonia), and other tests as required.
  • Support monthly chart audits, including MARs and TARs, as assigned.
  • Attend and actively participate in charge nurse and CNA meetings.
  • Participate in continuing education and training programs to maintain professional competence and regulatory compliance.
  • Serve on committees, workgroups, or other meetings as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned.
