About The Position

This position will serve as the SNAP-ED New York Nutrition Assistant for Cornell Cooperative Extension Association of Jefferson County and will support direct education activities to improve healthy food and lifestyle choices among limited resource families and individuals encompassing all age groups in various locations throughout the North Country Region. Under the direction of the Nutrition Program Manager, the position will help educators prepare for education sessions including purchasing materials, gathering materials, assisting and taking the lead with food preparation, and reporting information about the dissemination of nutrition education messages and concepts with a focus on general nutrition, food preparation, food safety and food budgeting to Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) eligible or SNAP recipients. The hourly rate for this position is $20.00. This position, based on eligibility, offers a comprehensive benefit package, to include: health and dental insurance and NYS retirement.

Requirements

  • Associate’s Degree or equivalent education (GED/High School Diploma and one (1) year transferrable program/functional experience).
  • Experience relevant to the role of the position.
  • Valid NYS Driver’s License and the ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position.
  • Ability to work flexible hours which may include evenings and/or weekends, as appropriate.
  • Ability to read and write in English.
  • Basic computer and word processing skills.
  • Ability to carry supplies and equipment, climb stairs.
  • Must be comfortable purchasing and preparing foods and reviewing and following recipes.
  • Must be comfortable with coordinating and tabling at community events.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

Nice To Haves

  • Nutrition-related knowledge/experience/background preferred.
  • Familiarity with the community in which the work will take place.
  • Experience working with the target audience (limited resource).
  • Ability to plan and organize personal work responsibilities according to priorities developed with immediate supervisor.

Responsibilities

  • Utilize existing program materials and educational framework to prepare materials, including food preparation for workshops, events, and food demonstrations that educate a targeted audience of adult and youth participants who are SNAP eligible or SNAP recipients about nutrition messages.
  • Collaborate with community agencies that serve the target audience in order to assist with scheduling.
  • Participate in tabling events promoting the SNAP-Ed program, messages and initiatives.
  • Complete necessary written documentation for program evaluation as required by programs and funders.
  • Maintain extreme confidentiality of information and data collected.
  • Coordinate short- and long-term work schedule for programming.
  • Maintain record of class participants and complete reports as required by programs and funders.
  • Perform program evaluation as designed by providing intent to change forms, demographic forms, surveys, pre/post tests, retro-pre surveys to program participants.
  • Coordinate, maintain and organize promotional and marketing materials for program use.
  • Inventory, clean and organize kitchen equipment and supplies.
  • Assist with development and distribution of marketing materials.
  • Effectively maintain professional relationships with other agencies, organizations and businesses that promote effective communication and facilitate continued programming efforts.
  • This position may require the transport of program participants and/or program materials and resources in performing position responsibilities.
  • In cooperation with Supervisor and/or Executive Director, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan as a means to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and to address changes in programming and association priorities.
  • Collaborate in activities that are in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension including but not limited to, general marketing of Extension programs and other duties as assigned.
  • Support the association to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Be familiar and strive to follow any applicable federal, state, local regulations, association health and safety policy/procedure/requirement and standard.
  • Act proactively to prevent accidents/injuries and communicate hazards to supervisors when identified.
