About The Position

Operating Room Technician 2 perform specialized work in assisting in the performance of complex surgical procedures in hospital operating rooms. Employees in this classification are responsible for preparation of operating rooms for surgical procedures; maintaining operational readiness of specialized equipment; serves as maintenance of operating room instruments and equipment following surgery.

Requirements

  • Generally requires 3 to 5 years of related experience.
  • High School diploma is required.
  • Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work accurately while meeting multiple deadlines.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
  • Ability to handle difficult and stressful situations with critical thinking and professional composure.
  • Ability to understand and follow instructions.
  • Knowledge and skill in use of job appropriate technology and software applications.
  • Must meet and maintain current all unit specific and organizational skills/competencies, certifications/licensures, as required by the clinical area.
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) and any additional applicable life support certification for Healthcare Providers is required upon hire with at least 6 months validity and maintenance at JHS for the duration of employment.

  • Operating Room Technician certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Uses a systematic process to provide/modify care and patient/family education.
  • Assists in the inspection and indicated cleaning of the room prior to the procedure.
  • Assists in collection of necessary equipment and supplies utilizing the surgeons procedure card.
  • Maintains aseptic technique throughout all phases of work.
  • Assembles instruments and supplies on table and mayo stand.
  • Performs counts with the circulating nurse.
  • Assists in the draping of the operative site.
  • Assists surgeon and scrub nurse; anticipates and supplies the needs of the surgeon with instruments, sutures and sponges throughout the procedure.
  • Assumes responsibility for the identification and maintenance of specimens after release from the surgeon until release to the circulating nurse.
  • Identifies medications on sterile table according to policy and procedure.
  • Utilizes safety measures for patient, self and other team members in the handling of sharps, cautery and other equipment.
  • Assists, when necessary, in the transfer of patient to recovery room bed.
  • Assists in the total clean-up and readiness of the room for another procedure.
  • Performs Unit specific duties.

  • Performs all other related job duties as assigned.
