Savage is looking for an experienced manager in chemical or refinery-type operations The Operations Manager position will provide managerial oversight at the Midwest Forming Facility in Chicago, IL. Operations include Sulphur forming, plant operations, and transportation. There will be other opportunities to support the company in varying capacities at times. Occasionally the Operations Manager will be asked to contribute in ways which may include the support of existing Savage operations as well as the development of new ones. These contributions will require interaction with people from all parts the company and in different industries. Additionally, there will be periodic regional meetings that will require attendance as well as periodic company and safety meetings. Travel will be required for any or all of these activities.

Requirements

  • Working knowledge of material handling facilities and equipment including the associated components and maintenance thereof
  • Working knowledge of computers and related hardware and common business software; knowledge of computer networks and programmable logic controllers a plus
  • Above average spreadsheet and word processing skills
  • Ability to write in English coherently with proper grammar and tone
  • Able to see the “big picture”
  • Understanding of heavy, industrial equipment from an operating and safety perspective
  • Ability to manage projects from conception to final commissioning
  • Experience with a computerized maintenance management system
  • Willing to study and learn new technical skills and techniques.
  • BS degree; Engineering or Business Management degree/certificate preferred
  • Experience developing annual business plans and related budgets/staffing plans as wells reviewing, understanding and following up/responding to daily/weekly/monthly financial statements.
  • Ability to lead a team in an industrial setting, effectively balancing Customer, Company and Team Member needs
  • Understands and is committed to the growth and development of co-workers
  • Ability to delegate and/or involve others where appropriate (Shared Leadership)
  • Ability to effectively communicate on several different levels (Customers, Team and other Managers)
  • Sets tone, motivates and persuades Team Members to follow his/her example in the areas of safety, health and the environment
  • Ability to interact and work effectively with vendors, always maintaining a high level of integrity.
  • The ability to wear full PPE including a hard hat, hearing & eye protection, steel-toed shoes and physically fit to pass the necessary tests to be able to wear a respirator. Some of the work will be outdoors working alongside field personnel, climbing stairs, ladders and on/off material handling equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Operation site leader for the Savage Team Members employed at that site, an example of high integrity and fair treatment of others
  • Demonstrates a commitment to “zero occurrences” by effectively leading the safety, health and environmental efforts at the operation
  • Effective utilization of the “Safety Specialist” program as a tool for accomplishing the safety goals of the operation and for developing future leadership
  • Oversees execution of Savage’s “S7 Delivery System” including prompt resolution of deficiencies and action items.
  • Develops and oversees execution of the site Business Plan including budgeting, projecting and ongoing cost management
  • Builds and maintains strong customer relationships at multiple levels
  • Leads Team with the ability to solve problems and make decisions both individually and in a team environment
  • Oversight, and thorough understanding of, maintenance for fixed and mobile assets, including tracking of maintenance activities in computerized maintenance management software.
