About The Position

This position is established as an OPS (Other Personnel Services) position and will be responsible for performing health related activities in one of the assigned schools during the current approved school term. This position will work 32.5 hours per week based on the Holmes and Washington County school district calendars. Direct supervision will be provided by a Nursing Program Specialist, Registered Nurse, or the Executive Community Health Nursing Director. Assists the nurse in her assessment and counseling of individual students. Maintains a record of the medical needs of all students with special health care needs. Records will be completed at the time of visit to the health room, 100% of the time. Obtains vital signs as indicated, recording results on a daily health room activity log. Prepares a monthly, weekly, and daily health room activity log of students visiting the health room for the nurse. Will accurately complete vital signs and activities 100% of time. Assists nurse in screening for pediculosis. Refers students to the nurse that have positive results for counseling and treatment as indicated. Assists students in the administration of prescription medications, as prescribed by school board policy. Accurately follows procedures, administering only medications that school nurse has instructed health support technician/aide to administer. Performs vision and hearing screening on individual students. Assists the nurse in rescreening of students who fail initial exam. Provides directions and explanation to student of tests to be performed. Performance of vision and hearing screening to be done according to procedures and will be performed accurately, 100% of the time. Makes appropriate referrals to the designated school personnel concerning students that need to be referred to the school nurse or principal. This activity will be performed without confusion and according to procedures. Assist the nurse in evaluating immunization status of all children entering school. Assist the nurse in contacting parents and with written communication to parents. Will be able to identify immunization needs of individual students accurately 100% of the time. Provides students with First Aid and CPR if indicated in emergencies. Keeps log of all First Aid performed and documents all services performed in the cumulative health record. Will remain current with First Aid and CPR certification. Maintains the health room in an orderly and clean manner at all times. Responsible for the inventory of medical supplies used in the health room on a weekly basis. Medical supplies will always be available for use. Will assist Nursing Program Specialist/School Health Coordinator with School Health Fairs as indicated. Other duties as assigned. This position works approximately 6.5 hours per day based upon the Holmes and Washington County School District Calendars. Position is a 10-month position and is inactive during Fall, Winter, & Spring Breaks/Holidays, other observed holidays, in-service days, and approximately 8 weeks during the summer.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of basic medical terminology.
  • Knowledge of basic pharmaceutical terminology and calculations.
  • Knowledge of basic computer software and data entry.
  • Skill in using medical instruments or testing equipment.
  • Skill in calibrating liquid unit dosing equipment and dose exchange systems.
  • Skill in taking blood pressure readings.
  • Ability to interview students to obtain health information.
  • Ability to work independently without direct supervision.
  • Ability to follow instructions.
  • Ability to keep accurate records.
  • Ability to distribute prescribed medications.
  • Ability to listen and communicate effectively.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Required - Driver’s License
  • Required - High School Diploma or equivalent
