The Florida Department of Health (DOH) is responsible for the health and safety of all citizens and visitors to the state. As a public health agency, the Florida Department of Health must monitor the health status of Floridians, diagnose, and investigate health problems, and mobilize local communities to address health-related issues. The Florida Department of Health develops policies and plans that support health goals, enforce laws and regulations that protect the health of all residents and visitors, and link people to needed health care services. The Florida Department of Health also provides specialized assistance to pregnant women, infants, and children with special health care needs, regulates health care practitioners, and provides medical disability determinations.

Requirements

  • Basic phlebotomy skills and specimen handling
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Understanding written protocols, procedures in work related documents.
  • Knowing how to find information and identifying essential information.
  • Using logic and analysis to identify the strengths and weaknesses of different approaches.
  • Adjusting actions in relation to others' actions.
  • Knowledge of Health Management System.
  • Knowledge and skills in basic phlebotomy.
  • Ability to use Microsoft 365 applications (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, MS Teams).
  • Knowledge of OSHA and Safety requirements associated with a lab.
  • Skills handling bio-hazardous waste procedures.
  • Skills in the use of universal precautions when working in a laboratory setting and/or with other potentially infectious materials (OPIM).
  • Ability to perform data entry
  • One year of phlebotomy experience
  • Willingness to draw/handle patients’ urine, blood and/or sputum specimens potentially infected with communicable diseases such as Syphilis, Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, TB, Hepatitis C, Mpox and HIV/AIDS or other emerging diseases.
  • At least one year of client/patient customer service experience
  • One year of electronic health record experience

Responsibilities

  • Development and maintenance log for all testing, licensure, calibration and inspection of all lab equipment and supplies.
  • Maintains the highest level of communication with the Health Department’s lab coordinator and the Bureau of Labs and contracted lab staff for any expertise necessary in the completion of duties.
  • Collects laboratory specimens and performs assigned laboratory procedures and other tests as necessary and immediately reports abnormal findings to appropriate staff.
  • Order’s laboratory supplies, rotates stock, and monitors expiration dates.
  • Cleans and maintains all laboratory equipment as indicated through lab procedures manual.
  • Provides students and staff orientation and guidance to laboratory equipment and procedures.
  • Maintains a current laboratory procedure manual for the use of all staff.
  • Submits EAR’s and timesheets per DOH guidelines.
  • Performs other duties as required.
