About The Position

The Optical Engineer I evaluates tooling and polymer products of optical microstructures manufactured on precision machines and molds. Utilizes statistical tools and methods for evaluation of new designs as well as past ones. Uses existing automated data handling software and implements new applications to drive data-based decisions quicker. Utilizes optical design capabilities to provide new and improved optical designs. The role is in the area of optics, metrology, design evaluation and optics design.

Requirements

  • B.S. Degree in Optics or Physics
  • 0 - 2 years experience in an Optics Design type and/or a manufacturing environment.
  • Familiarity with computer applications / design software such as FRED, Zemax, Code 5, ASAP, or equivalent.
  • Programming and data analysis skills.
  • Strong knowledge of Statistics, DOE, and design controls.
  • Excellent communications skills both verbal and written required.
  • Must have a proven track record of achievements.
  • Must have a positive can do attitude.
  • Must be a fast learner and have drive and self-motivation.
  • Must strive towards continuous improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Gain expertise on in house optical metrology methods and equipment.
  • Support product testing of tools and product sample for Engineering development.
  • Advance ORAFOL’s understanding of microstructured products through optical modeling, theoretical investigations, and experimental tests.
  • Possess and develop a theoretical understanding of geometrical and diffractive optical micro structure performance.
  • Lead the qualification of new and replacement tooling from initial prototype evaluation to driving scale-up for manufacturing.
  • Provide guidance to tooling supplier for creation of original tools, prototypes, and specifications related to tools for manufacturing.
  • Lead the implementation of changes to the optical performance of ORAFOL products that improve the products performance with respect to the customer requirements.
  • Capability to learn the design and development software and provide useful input towards its optimization and continual refinement.
  • Serve as a technical resource on cross functional teams.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or as the situation dictates
  • Become a technical leader / resource with the utilization of the Zygo metrology equipment – all aspects from maintenance to programming of the instrument.
  • Follow prescribed safety guidelines in accordance to ORAFOL Americas Safety program; use required PPE
  • Maintains an optimal level of product quality and adheres to ORAFOL’s Quality Program
