Requirements

  • Qualified candidates will be enrolled in a PhD or Master’s degree program in semiconductor, electrical, optical, physical engineering or a related major.
  • Strong foundation in physics (e.g. lasers), optical sciences (e.g. coherence, speckle, diffraction, imaging) and/or electrical engineering (e.g. electricity & magnetism)

Nice To Haves

  • Hands-on experience or equivalent skill level in optical component/system design for photonic and/or fiber-coupled systems and spectral/performance characterization of laser devices in Telecom and/or other applications
  • Strong analytic and data analysis/mining skills via Excel, Minitab and/or JMP
  • Familiarity in LabView is desirable, but not required
  • Experienced in development and implementation of test setups for R&D environment
  • Communicates/contributes effectively in cross-functional teams (esp. with manufacturing)
  • Experience in DOE, SPC, DFX, GR&R and GR-468-CORE qualification
  • MS degree or above preferred in semiconductor, electrical, optical or physical engineering

Responsibilities

  • Design and simulation of optical components (e.g. lenses, diffusers, diffractive/holographic optical elements, lensed fiber, etc.) and opto-mechanical systems for beam-conditioning of free-space and fiber-coupled semiconductor lasers
  • Design Verification Testing (DVT), characterization of high-power single & multi-mode laser diodes for telecom, industrial, and consumer markets (e.g., spectral locking, noise, coherence collapse, Stimulated Brillion Scattering, fiber/volume Bragg gratings, high-speed characterization, the field of view)
  • Cost-effective tolerancing of low-cost, manufacturable optical components for high-volume consumer applications
  • Define performance specification limits for high-power single-mode and multi-mode laser diodes (e.g., LIV, WPE, spectral)
  • Work with electrical/mechanical engineering and assembly/packaging staff on the design, development, and packaging of photonic optical systems
  • Support development implementation of test equipment in R&D environment needed to perform DVT characterization tests, including software/hardware integration
  • Document and present characterization results
