Industrial Scientific’s product development team includes skilled engineers, designers and technicians in the disciplines of electrical, mechanical, and firmware engineering. Third-party design partners are used (both locally and abroad) to augment our in-house team or to provide specific expertise. For the most part, we build what we design – often in our modern manufacturing factory right here in Western Pennsylvania. We design and develop a wide variety of world-class gas detection instruments, sensors, accessories and infrastructure for worker connectivity and remote management. Our designs include the latest mixed-signal embedded computing technology, mechanical packaging, miniaturization, and compelling user-interfaces. We partner with a dedicated, in-house application software team providing feature-rich web-based applications that help our customers keep their workers safe. An Optical Technical Lead is a skilled professional who will lead the optical sensing domain, ensuring hardware and algorithms delivery best-in-class results. This person will often serve as the Lead Scientist in the ISC Stage-Gate Product Development Process.

Requirements

  • Minimum PhD in Physics, Optical Engineering or related field from an accredited engineering college or university
  • Minimum 5 years experience in optical sensing, photonics or sensor algorithm development
  • Demonstrated expertise in optical system design and signal processing
  • Demonstrated experience with hardware/firmware integration for sensor systems
  • Demonstrated analytical skills
  • Self-starter with the ability to work as part of a team while also meeting individual responsibilities
  • Able to work effectively in a formal product development team environment
  • Able to exercise independent, sound judgment and decision making
  • Able to commit to and work under deadlines
  • Demonstrated understanding of Stage-Gate development process
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in environmental, gas or particulate monitoring
  • Proficiency in JIRA and JAMA
  • Experience using statistical analysis models
  • Experience in project management
  • Experience in regulated industries (e.g. medical devices, aerospace, automotive)

Responsibilities

  • Lead design, analysis and validation of optical sensing systems
  • Develop and refine algorithms for interpreting sensor output
  • Analyze data to resolve discrepancies between expected and actual performance
  • Collaborate with cross functional team to optimize hardware and system integration
  • Develop and maintain documentation for designs, validation protocols and algorithm development
  • Monitor advancements in optical sensing technologies and recommend updates to keep products best-in-class
  • Ensure compliance with relevant agency approvals and safety standards
  • Participate in technical reviews, cross-functional meetings and strategy sessions
