About The Position

Provide academic instruction for middle and high school students who are deaf and hard of hearing in their primary mode of communication within a residential education setting in Physical Education. This position is responsible for providing direction and coordination of all athletic events and physical education programs.

Requirements

Nice To Haves

  • Preference will be given to license holders who are credentialed to teach deaf/hard of hearing students.
  • Certified in adapted physical education and/or health and physical education.
  • Certified in special education/adaptive curriculum.
  • American Sign Language skills

Responsibilities

  • Individual and small group instruction in physical education as well as any non-academic areas, if necessary, which may be addressed by the IEP (Individual Education Plan) for students K-12 depending on placement at Supervisor’s discretion.
  • Oversee all aspects of the athletic programs that are sponsored by NC School for the Deaf.
  • Coordinate all athletic events.
  • Effective instruction requires becoming knowledgeable about and implementing assigned curricula, implementation of daily-prepared lessons, utilization of acquired and accumulated materials, resources, and manipulatives as well as assessing and documenting students’ progress and performance. (NOTE: Lesson plans and/or assessment documentation will be supplied for review by supervisor upon request.)
  • Perform planning instructional activities; preparing IEP’s, attending to individual problems relating to student progress, performance, or behavior; preparing report cards; supervising and instructing teaching assistants; gathering and /or preparing instructional materials; supervising student teachers and/or observers from various colleges; participating in school related activities; attending committee meetings and in–service workshops; planning and implementing field trips; administering formal and informal test/assessments.
  • Communicate with other programs (residential, student support, etc.) on & off campus.
  • Serve as liaison between the residential and academic staff, between academic staff and parents, between academic staff and local educational agencies, etc. and serve as resource person for other schools.
  • Administering, proctoring, compiling, submitting any and all state mandated tests, portfolios, & inventories. State policies/procedures for testing are to be upheld at all times.
