About The Position

Under general supervision, performs a wide variety of manual, semi-skilled, and/or skilled labor in the maintenance and construction of grounds, parks, buildings, and recreational areas for the City by performing the following duties. This position differs from the Parks Maintenance Worker I in the ability to perform more complex maintenance duties, working independently with less supervision, exercising sound judgement, and operating a full-range of tools and mechanical related to specific assignments.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED) and four (4) years related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • Position may require a commercial driver’s license.

Responsibilities

  • Mows grass, plants trees, shrubs, or flowers according to instructions and planned design of landscaped area.
  • Grubs and weeds around bushes, trees, and flower beds.
  • Plants new and repairs established lawns.
  • Trims and edges around walks, flower beds, and walls.
  • Applies herbicide, sprays lawn, shrubs, and trees with fertilizer, herbicides, and insecticides as designated by crew leader, maintenance foreman and under supervision of licensed professional.
  • Trims hedges and shrubs.
  • Prunes trees, mulches, and cultivates gardens.
  • Sprays trees and shrubs and applies supplemental liquid and dry nutrients to lawn and trees as designated by crew leader and/or maintenance supervisor.
  • Picks up and disposes of litter and trash from grounds and designated areas.
  • Rakes and bags leaves.
  • Digs trenches and installs drainage pipes.
  • Keeps storm drains and culverts free of debris.
  • Repairs and paints, benches, tables, and guardrails, and assists in repair of roads, walks, buildings, and mechanical equipment.
  • Makes minor repairs to concrete and asphalt walks and driveways.
  • Repairs fences, gates, walls, and walks.
  • Paints fences and outbuildings.
  • Maintains healthy turf areas in all park’s facilities. Fertilize, irrigate, aerate etc.
  • Sharpens tools such as weed cutters, edging tools, and shears.
  • Makes minor repairs on small equipment such as mowers, trimmers, and blowers.
  • Mows grass, prunes shrubs, trims trees, and plants flowers and shrubs from parks.
  • Removes leaves and other debris from parks.
  • Drives vehicles such as forklift, aerial lift, skid steer, dump trucks, trucks, and tractors.
  • Repairs and maintains tools and equipment.
  • Shovels snow from walks, biking trails, bridges, city parks, city parking lots and spreads ice-melt on public passageways to prevent ice buildup.
  • Confers with the Parks Maintenance Foreman to help coordinate the support of activities of other City Departments and organizations.
  • Interprets company policies to workers.
  • Acts as the “On Site” supervisor for enforcing safety regulations.
  • Assist with special projects performed by the Parks and Recreation Department and local organizations, including, but not limited to, construction projects, ballfield preparations, special events or programming and holiday lights display.
  • Responsibly for supervising temporary employee.
  • Reporting relationships, work assignments, work schedules may be subject to change in order to meet City needs or operational requirements.
  • Attendance at work and the ability to get along with the public, supervisors, and co-workers are essential elements of this position.
  • Work weekends, holidays as needed.
  • Receive certification for forklift, aerial lift, and other equipment.
  • Receive certification for CPR, AED, and other certifications as needed.
  • Daily work orders, meet yearly goals, maintain tools and equipment used in performance of duties, and attend meetings and trainings.
  • Other duties may be assigned.
