About The Position

Performs responsible semi-skilled work in the maintenance and repair of parks, greenways, buildings, playground equipment, and related facilities. Work involves maintaining and repairing facilities requiring skills in masonry, carpentry, plumbing, asphalt and concrete repair, landscaping and irrigation systems.  Employees are accountable for the safety of facilities and related Town liability and must be conscious of safety methods to avoid injury to others and self.   Work is performed under regular supervision and reviewed for timely completion of assignments and public acceptance of work quality. This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED and a minimum of one (1) year of related experience.
  • Possession of a valid North Carolina drivers license.
  • CPR, AED and First Aid Certification required within 6 months of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Works with team to maintain park trails and greenways, boardwalks, bridges, playgrounds, picnic tables and other park assets.
  • Sets up tables and chairs in rooms as requested and sets up equipment for special events and festivals. Also handles trash/recycling removal and general cleanup before, during and after events.
  • Operates a variety of heavy equipment and hand tools such as backhoes, tractors, excavators, dump truck, chainsaws, and mowers, trimmers and blowers.
  • Assists with playground checks and assures needed maintenance items are recorded and repaired; performs carpentry, tile and painting work to improve and repair facilities.
  • Assists with trade repairs including minor electrical, plumbing, carpentry, masonry, painting and other trades work.
  • Completes vehicle and equipment checklists and performs preventative maintenance on equipment to include greasing bearings, cleaning air filters, power washing; troubleshoots equipment when it stops working and identifies parts needed for repair.
  • Organizes tools and materials in work truck and on work site; takes safety precautions to block worksite off from public.
  • Gathers materials needed for project; calls in locate tickets if needed; follows instructions of Team Leader/Supervisor to complete work.
  • Assists with snow and ice removal and works with other Town departments as needed and assigned.
  • Performs landscaping duties requiring some knowledge of turf, plants, shrubbery and related tasks.
  • Ensures all restrooms are clean and in working order; assures trash cans, recycle bins are emptied in a timely manner; completes work orders for tasks performed.
