Supports a wide variety of secretarial, clerical and other departmental duties relative to the medical and professional business of the Laboratory Director, Pathologists, Pathology Assistant, and the Laboratory, in general. Job Description: DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Acts as a general assistant to the Clinical and Pathology Departments. Requires knowledge of medical terminology. Collects, documents, and transports surgical pathology specimens, cytology specimens, microbiology specimens, etc. from mainly the operating room and endoscopy to the lab. May collect specimens from other on campus units as needed. Assists with specimen receipt and specimen triage. Ensure proper labeling and identification of specimens and requisition forms. Brings discrepancies to the attention of senior staff and/or supervisor. Record discrepancies and resolutions for quality monitoring. Accession pathology specimens in Epic and properly label requisitions and specimen container(s) with the Epic generated surgical pathology case number. Print cassettes as needed. Organize and pack processed tissue cassettes for histology in a manner that will ensure their integrity during transport to histology; accounting for all blocks on the histology log and ensuring the blocks are all on a packing list. Assign cases to pathologists. Process internal Pathologists consult requests, inter-departmental requests, external fax requests for slides/blocks by locating the requested material, ensuring proper paperwork is complete, scanning slides/blocks onto the appropriate packing lists, when applicable, documenting the send-out material on log/spreadsheet. Perform send out of slides/blocks to reference labs as requested; ensure paperwork is complete and send-out material is documented on log/spreadsheet. Process slides/blocks returned to Pathology Department by scanning and receiving slides/blocks on a packing list, when applicable, re-filing material in an organized manner in the file cabinets/boxes, documenting any materials returned on logs/spreadsheet, scanning a copy of the report into Epic, when applicable. Directly communicates and liaises with inter-departmental staff members and reference labs on matters of ordering, requesting, send-out of pathology material. Assists the Pathologists in locating slide/block requests. Maintain adequate supplies and reagents in an organized manner. Putting away inventory. Monitor, maintain, and record room and laboratory equipment temperature and humidity readings. Initiates corrective action and brings to the attention of senior staff and/or supervisor. Responsible for tissue processor reagent maintenance; pull reagent bottles for decanting, refill and rotate reagent bottles and paraffin reservoirs. Answer all incoming phone calls with proper etiquette and respond to the needs of the caller. Pick up mail, review and distribute to appropriate parties. Support clinical lab departments: Receive specimens in the Laboratory computer system and distribute them in accordance with the urgency of the test requested. Prepare specimens according to the procedure for the test requested and store specimens at the appropriate storage temperature, if not immediately distributed. Accurately follow physician orders when ordering the test(s) in the Laboratory computer system. Determine and implement the appropriate course of action when unsure of an order or specimen required prior to obtaining the sample. Accurately document all pertinent patient demographic and insurance information if performing the registration function. Participate in and contribute to the department quality improvement activities. Perform all duties in accordance with safety laws, rules and regulations as set forth by appropriate regulatory and government agencies and in accordance with established departmental and hospital policies and procedures. Perform all other duties as required. Assist with local, state, federal, and regulatory agency compliance and preparedness activities. Perform job functions in a manner that promotes the safety and health of Milton Hospital co-workers, patients, and visitors at BID-Milton. Perform all duties in accordance with safety and other laws, rules, and regulations set forth by appropriate regulatory and government agencies and in accordance with established department and hospital policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Equivalent to the completion of high school.
  • Proficient in medical terminology.
  • Excellent typing skills
  • Possess basic computer skills.
  • Strong knowledge of medical and pathology terminology
  • Consistently follow standardized procedures.
  • Organize work to meet established deadlines.
  • Exercise independent judgment within boundaries of knowledge and skills.
