About The Position

The Patient Financial Counselor (PFC) assists the Patient Accounts Manager by handling patient communications with regards to patient accounts which includes explaining the account to the patient, determining Patient financial responsibility and negotiating and collecting advance deposits for elective procedures, attempting to secure payment, identifying and preparing patient accounts for pre-collection letters, identifying and preparing patient accounts for outsourcing to the collection agency, and enforcing patient collections in accordance with hospital policy. The PFC interfaces and coordinates with the hospital’s patient financial services representatives, ancillary service departments and other hospital departments. The PFC is considered a major communication point with patients and an important determinant of the quality of the hospital’s public relations.

Requirements

  • A combination of collection knowledge (preferably in a hospital or a clinic setting) and patient accounting.
  • Microsoft Word
  • Excel
  • Medicare/Medi-Cal Private insurance billing process knowledge

Responsibilities

  • Answers patient inquiries concerning hospital bills and assists patients with resolution of billing difficulties.
  • Reviews patient correspondence and attempts to resolve issues outlined in correspondence.
  • Conducts research to respond to patient inquires.
  • Order re-bills as necessary.
  • Resolves disputes within 24 hours of discovery, if possible.
  • Identifies patterns, problems, and trends developing with respect to internal processing delays and delays in reimbursement.
  • Recommends corrective action.
