About The Position

Carmel CC currently has a Full-Time opening for a Payroll Accountant. The Payroll Accountant is responsible for processing and reconciling payroll accurately and on time while ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. This role partners closely with HR, Finance and management to maintain payroll records, retirement plans, benefit carrier invoices, resolve discrepancies, support audits and financial reporting.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • 2–5 years of payroll or accounting experience
  • Strong knowledge of payroll laws, tax regulations, and accounting principles
  • Proficiency in HRIS/payroll systems and Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel
  • High level of accuracy, attention to detail, and confidentiality

Nice To Haves

  • Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) or similar certification
  • Experience using ADP Workforce Now
  • Public accounting or audit experience
  • Knowledge of 401(k), 457 retirement plans

Responsibilities

  • Process biweekly payroll for team members, including salaries, hourly wages, bonuses, commissions, and adjustments
  • Ensure accurate calculation of taxes, benefits, garnishments, and other deductions
  • Reconcile payroll accounts and prepare payroll journal entries for the general ledger
  • Maintain and update team member payroll records, ensuring data accuracy and confidentiality
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local payroll, wage, and tax regulations
  • Prepare and file payroll tax reports (e.g., 941, W-2, W-3, ACA, state filings)
  • Respond to unemployment wage requests and employment verifications in a professional and timely manner
  • Liaison between third part administers of 401(k), 457, Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA), Health Reimbursement Accounts (HRA).
  • Reconcile monthly benefit invoices and ensure timely payment.
  • Prepare and provide labor reports, payroll budget sheets to department heads, recordkeeping for Paid Time Off (PTO) usage for payroll accuracy.
  • Provide clear and supportive guidance to team members and management regarding payroll, time keeping and retirement plan questions.
  • Respond to team members payroll inquiries and resolve discrepancies promptly
  • Support internal and external audits by providing payroll documentation and reports
  • Assist with month-end and year-end close activities related to payroll
  • Recommend process improvements to increase efficiency and accuracy
  • Various accounting tasks as requested by CFO
