Alleghany Highlands Community Services (AHCS) is looking for a dedicated, detail-oriented professional to step into the vital role of Payroll and Finance Support Specialist As a non-profit state agency, we value precision, confidentiality, and a commitment to excellence. In this role, you will have overall responsibility for the accuracy of payroll records, tax reporting, and ensuring all voluntary and involuntary deductions meet strict deadlines as well as being the backup for accounts payable and completing other accounting duties.

Requirements

  • Experience: A solid background in processing payroll or a specialized combination of education and experience that proves you can hit the ground running.
  • Education: High school diploma is required, though an Associate's degree or equivalent experience is preferred.
  • Technical Savvy: Advanced skills in Excel and experience with Electronic Payroll systems.
  • Knowledge: A strong grasp of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and current federal/state tax regulations.
  • Professionalism: The ability to handle sensitive matters with extreme diplomacy, discretion, and tact while maintaining absolute confidentiality

Responsibilities

  • Comprehensive Payroll Processing: Take ownership of the full payroll cycle, from auditing weekly timekeeping to managing employee leave balances.
  • Tax & Compliance Stewardship: Handle the processing of tax payments and lead the preparation of quarterly and annual tax filings to ensure zero penalties for the agency.
  • Retirement System Expertise: Manage monthly Virginia Retirement System (VRS) reporting through the VRS system.
  • Financial Accuracy: Perform essential reconciliations for payroll and prepaid liabilities, prepare bank deposits, and manage general ledger entries.
  • Audit Support: Act as a key contributor during the annual Workers' Compensation audit by auditing and verifying all necessary salary information.
