The Payroll Tax Manager oversees all payroll tax compliance operations for a high‑volume, multi‑entity payroll environment consisting of 60+ companies and more than 2,500 federal, state, and local payroll tax accounts Work Location: 3000 C Street, Suite 301, Anchorage, AK.

Requirements

  • 2 + years of payroll management experience
  • 5+ years’ experience managing high‑volume, multi‑state, multi entity payroll tax operations.
  • Expertise with federal, state, and local payroll tax regulations
  • Experience with 3rd party payroll tax service providers
  • Highschool Diploma or GED.
  • Strong analytical abilities with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, especially Excel.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Excellent organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast‑paced, dynamic environment

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with ADP SmartCompliance or similar third‑party tax service providers.
  • Experience with Deltek Cost Point
  • Certified Payroll Professional designation (CPP).
  • Federal Contracting background.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor, and develop the payroll tax team, ensuring strong technical capability, consistent accuracy, and high performance.
  • Provide ongoing training, guidance, and coaching to ensure staff remain current on tax regulations, system configuration, and departmental processes.
  • Ensure the team meets all deadlines and maintains operational excellence in a high‑volume payroll environment.
  • Lead internal tax initiatives, process improvements, and compliance enhancements in partnership with cross‑functional departments
  • Ensure that all federal, state, and local payroll taxes are correctly withheld, reported, paid, and filed in compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Oversee the accurate, timely review and reconciliation of taxable wages, withholding tax, unemployment tax, disability insurance tax, and related liabilities for multiple U.S. legal entities.
  • Lead year‑end tax activities, including planning, reconciling, balancing, and reviewing Forms W‑2, W‑2C, and all related federal and state agency forms.
  • Ensure payroll tax processes comply with federal, state, and local regulations as well as internal policies.
  • Analyze complex payroll tax issues—including employee mobility, reciprocity agreements, employer‑provided fringe benefits, local taxation, and expat taxation—and provide strategic solutions.
  • Monitor, investigate, and resolve payroll tax notices; proactively implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence
  • Oversee and manage the performance of third‑party tax filing service vendors.
  • Ensure all payroll tax payments, filings, and data submissions are accurate, timely,
  • Partner closely with third‑party vendors to ensure the accuracy and integrity of all tax data transmitted from payroll systems.
  • Ensure timely registration of new tax accounts, closure of inactive accounts, and management of Power of Attorney (POA) documents
  • Oversee the setup, maintenance, and deactivation of all payroll tax jurisdictions in payroll system
  • Direct the maintenance and review of taxability configurations in the payroll system to ensure accurate withholding and reporting across all jurisdictions.
  • Oversee state and local payroll tax audits for all entities.
  • Lead preparation, reconciliation, and review of monthly, quarterly, and annual payroll tax filings
  • Oversee reconciliation of W‑2 wages, taxable wages, and tax withholdings to source systems and third‑party vendor reports.
  • Review and approve amended returns, including Forms W‑2C and related federal and state adjustments.
  • Ensure all payroll tax processes align with internal control requirements and support internal and external audit requests.
  • Partner with Treasury on payroll tax funding, funding issues, and reconciliation of outgoing payments.
  • Lead the testing and validation of payroll tax system upgrades and enhancements prior to production release.
  • Participate in or lead special projects as assigned, including acquisitions, system updates, and process optimization initiatives
