About The Position

The Pediatric Cardiac Implantable Device (PCID) Nurse serves as a clinical specialist providing advanced clinical expertise focusing exclusively on pediatric cardiac implantable devices within the Primary Children’s Heart Center. This role provides specialized device evaluation and management, patient and family education, triage, interdisciplinary coordination and collaboration, and data management. The PCID Nurse serves as a proactive clinical leader, supporting high-quality care, standardization of device protocols, and continuous improvement within this specialty area.   • Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse (RN) in state of practice.
  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN) from an accredited institution (degree will be verified).
  • Registered Nurses (RNs) hired or promoted into this role must obtain their Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) within four years of their hire or promotion date. If there is an existing education agreement, that agreement will take precedence.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification for Healthcare Providers
  • Unit specific certification as required (i.e., ACLS, PALS, etc.). (Applicants must either have required additional certifications (e.g., ACLS, PALs, NRP) upon hire or must obtain them within a specified timeframe determined by service line and department guidelines.)
  • One year of clinical nursing experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in assigned clinical area.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and guide nursing staff.

Responsibilities

  • Independently perform comprehensive device evaluations to ensure optimal PCID function.
  • Analyze and triage device data, identify complications, and collaborate with electrophysiology (EP) providers to optimize programming based on patient needs.
  • Coordinate vendor consultations when needed and ensure all evaluations are accurately documented, saved to device databases, and uploaded to the EMR.
  • Generate provider-ready reports for signature and chart integration.
  • Conduct routine and urgent device evaluations for PCID patients.
  • Coordinate with four pediatric cardiology outreach locations to ensure timely device assessments and proper data transfer.
  • Provide device support for hospitalized patients during ER visits, EP lab procedures, surgeries, imaging, and other inpatient encounters.
  • Enroll and maintain all PCID patients in industry remote monitoring systems.
  • Review daily transmissions, manage alerts, assess device function and battery longevity, and troubleshoot issues.
  • Generate and route reports for provider review and EMR upload.
  • Deliver ongoing education and discharge teaching for patients and families regarding implants, generator changes, lead revisions, and device care.
  • Respond to all PCID-related communications from families, providers, dentists, vendors, nurses, schools, and other stakeholders.
  • Ensure accurate and timely follow-through on all communications, consulting with EP providers as needed.
  • Coordinate medication instructions and pre-procedure requirements with ordering providers and pre-screen nurses for EP procedures.
  • Educate fellows, APPs, and other healthcare professionals on device utility, data interpretation, and arrhythmia management.
  • Collaborate with EP providers to develop, implement, and standardize PCID protocols, proactively supporting program improvements and facilitating change as needed.
  • Serve as liaison between industry vendors, schedulers, nurse coordinators, and providers during procedures and clinical encounters.
  • Maintain comprehensive PCID databases, including demographics, diagnoses, device and lead history, arrhythmia events, programming changes, and imaging encounters.
  • Oversee maintenance and updates for all PCID equipment, programmers, and iPads.
  • Track vendor advisories and recalls, coordinating necessary patient follow-up or device reprogramming as necessary.
  • Serve as Charge Champion to ensure accurate, complete, and timely charge capture for all device evaluations.
  • Complete daily billing using appropriate codes based on device type and evaluation performed.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development related to device evaluation, interpretation, and troubleshooting through vendor and research-based education.
  • Support EP-related research by gathering historical data, obtaining consents, educating families, and assisting with data collection and reporting.
  • Provide orientation, mentorship, and direct precepting for new PCID staff.
