About The Position

To support and mentor students studying abroad/away at all stages: researching opportunities, pre-departure and re-entry. To provide administrative support for the Smith Center for Global Engagement. This position is hiring for the fall 2026 semester, possibly working a few hours during the spring 2026 semester to train.

Requirements

  • Student Work Award Recipient
  • Previously studied abroad/away through a St. Olaf approved program (January Term, semester, summer, or year)
  • Interest in serving in this role for at least two or three years preferred
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Be willing to work occasional evenings and weekends

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of visa processes a plus
  • Possess basic computer skills including but not limited to: word processing, e-mail, and Excel.
  • Work independently and in a team environment
  • Skill in interpersonal and written communication
  • Ability to always greet visitors in a polite, courteous and helpful manner
  • Ability to be flexible and willing to help out and adjust workload quickly
  • Skill in completing tasks accurately and with attention to detail
  • Ability and willingness to support, respect and commit to embracing diverse backgrounds, values and points of view to build a strong and inclusive community including faculty, staff, students and partners
  • Familiarity with and an understanding of the needs of students with diverse backgrounds and identities, including first-generation college students, students with disabilities, students of varying racial, gender, ethnic, or cultural backgrounds and identities, etc.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as an initial point of contact for visitors and students (ie. answer questions about study abroad/away study programs)
  • Advise students in study abroad/away study programs in one-on-one and group settings
  • Hold regular advising office hours
  • Support and assist in developing and facilitating programming (i.e. orientation sessions, 101 Advising Sessions, social events, open houses, etc.)
  • Give presentations in classrooms, meetings, orientations, and other events (i.e. orientation sessions, 101 Advising Sessions, social events, etc.)
  • Help students navigate the website and application
  • Assist in updating/maintaining website and TerraDotta/Studio Abroad and social media accounts
  • Assist with clerical tasks as assigned (ie.phones, filing, scanning, checking mail, etc.)
  • Assist with promotion of study abroad/away through marketing and events (i.e. create/edit letters, posters, etc.)
  • Assist Smith Center staff as needed
  • Other duties as assigned
