About The Position

We are SLR Consulting (Americas), a 1200+ team of advisory, environmental, engineering, and regulatory professionals across Canada and the United States. We deliver environmental and sustainability services to our clients through the integration of over 30 advisory, technical environmental, and engineering disciplines to help clients address some of their most complex challenges around sustainability. The Role The People Business Partner, North America is a true partner to the assigned business group’s leadership, providing hands-on support and guidance on people-related priorities. This includes helping with performance management, salary planning, promotions, and other core People activities to ensure leaders and teams have what they need to succeed. This role is all about partnership—collaborating with leaders, People Ops Americas, Talent Acquisition, and Center’s of Expertise to deliver initiatives consistently while balancing regional needs with global alignment. By supporting talent development, employee engagement, and employee relations, the People Business Partner helps create a positive employee experience and contributes to the success of the business group and the wider organization.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Human Resources, Business, or a related discipline from a recognized Canadian or US institution; professional HR qualifications (e.g., CHRP, CHRL, PHR, SHRM-CP) preferred.
  • 12+ years of progressive HR experience, including HR business partnering within multi-location and complex organizational environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to partner effectively with managers and leaders, building strong relationships and providing practical guidance.
  • Strong understanding of core people processes, including performance management, talent development, succession planning, and compensation.
  • Experience and knowledge of US employment legislation across multiple states, with the ability to provide practical guidance to managers; Canadian legislation experience is an advantage.
  • Good commercial awareness and understanding of how HR supports business objectives.
  • Knowledge of employee engagement drivers and experience supporting initiatives to enhance culture and engagement.
  • Confident coach and adviser to managers, able to provide guidance on employee relations and people management issues.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to work across multiple teams and functions.
  • Practical experience with HR systems; Workday experience preferred.

  • Experience supporting integration of new teams or acquisitions is an advantage, providing hands-on support as part of the People team.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a trusted partner to the assigned business group’s leadership in North America, providing guidance and support on people-related priorities and initiatives.
  • Collaborate with the global People team—including People Operations Americas, Talent Acquisition, and Centre’s of Expertise—to advise and support the assigned group on core people processes and activities.
  • Support the delivery of core people programs for the assigned group, including performance management, talent development, succession planning, and compensation, ensuring alignment with career frameworks.
  • Provide practical advice and coaching to managers in the assigned group on policy, employee relations, performance management, and engagement matters, supporting respectful and effective handling of complex situations when required.
  • Assist with the integration of new acquisitions within the assigned group, providing support to the People team to help ensure a smooth onboarding and cultural alignment experience.
  • Support workforce planning and talent initiatives by identifying capability gaps, advising on resourcing strategies, and contributing to recruitment and retention efforts in collaboration with Talent Acquisition.
  • Partner with managers to facilitate performance calibration, talent reviews, and succession planning discussions, ensuring fairness, consistency, and alignment with organizational priorities.
  • Contribute to projects and process improvements with the global People team, supporting the development of streamlined practices that enhance the employee experience in the assigned group.
  • Support initiatives that build engagement, reinforce SLR principles, and foster a positive employee culture within the assigned business group.
  • Participate in learning and development initiatives for managers and employees, providing guidance on career progression, skill development, and professional growth opportunities.
