About The Position

The purpose of this position is to provide the PADLS (Pennsylvania Animal Diagnostic Laboratory System) - New Bolton Center with coverage of service over the extended work week in the Pennsylvania Egg Quality Assurance Program (PEQAP) and Clinical Microbiology laboratories. Diagnostic bacterial cultures, food/feed cultures, and serological testing are performed. Assistance with the day-to-day operations of the laboratories, including the quality assurance, inventory control, media and reagent preparation, and data entry will be in order to provide accurate test results to the clients and maintain AAVLD accreditation. Good interpersonal skills are needed to communicate effectively with faculty, staff and clients, both orally and written. The Microbiology Lab at the New Bolton Center (Kennett Square, PA) requires a full-time diagnostic laboratory technician to perform routine diagnostic bacterial cultures, microbial identifications, food/feed cultures and serology assays, as well as provide assistance in maintaining the laboratory’s quality assurance and inventory control programs.

Requirements

  • Good interpersonal skills are necessary to effectively communicate with faculty, staff, and clients, both verbally and in writing.
  • A valid driver's license is required.
  • Laboratory Technician B High School Grad/GE Degree and 1 to 2 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  • Laboratory Technician C Bachelor of Science and 0 to 1 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with automated microbial identification systems is preferred.
  • An associate’s Degree or 2 years of college in Biology or a related discipline with one year of experience is preferred.
  • A Bachelor's Degree in Microbiology or a related discipline and 2 to 3 years of post-graduate/post-certification experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine bacterial cultures and salmonella specific testing, including but not limited to set up, microbial identification, antibiotic susceptibility testing, serotyping, and serological testing
  • Reporting results: data entry and client communications
  • Maintain quality assurance/quality control programs in compliance with accreditation requirements
  • Assist with ongoing research projects and test validations
  • Inventory control
  • Back-up courier service for the Manheim Field Office
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned
