About The Position

Applicant must possess a High School diploma or equivalent and a current California Certified Phlebotomy Technician Level I certificate (CPT1). Minimum one year of blood collection/phlebotomy experience in a hospital or CLIA waived laboratory setting, preferred. Minimum of 1 year experience in blood draw in adults, children and infants. Must have or willing to obtain current CPR certification from the American Heart Association or Red Cross prior to orientation. Laboratory practice regulations, such as specimen handling and processing, record maintenance, proficiency testing, quality control procedures and documentation of all corrective actions. This position requires a flexible working schedule. The phlebotomist is responsible for obtaining specimen samples from infant, pediatric, and adult patients for laboratory testing. The phlebotomist processes Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA) waived tests in the laboratory and prepares outgoing specimens for pick-up by the reference laboratory. The phlebotomist is a front-line customer service member engaging with patients and the medical staff. The phlebotomist works independently of other lab personnel and is proficient with proper blood collection procedures and requirements and specimen labeling. Must be able to work with the Indian community, and be sensitive to the Indian Culture and its needs.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Current California Certified Phlebotomy Technician Level I certificate (CPT1).
  • Minimum one year of blood collection/phlebotomy experience in a hospital or CLIA waived laboratory setting preferred.
  • Knowledge of: Theory and practice in Phlebotomy. General laboratory protocols in a CLIA waived laboratory setting.
  • Skills Successfully draws blood from patients of all ages with minimal or no complications. Efficient and proper specimen processing per laboratory requirements. Attentive to detail. Able to reprioritize workflow from day to day as needed; Self-motivated.
  • License CPR (BLS Provider) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or the American Red Cross. Certification may be obtained prior to orientation.
  • Ability To Must have reliable transportation. Must be able to work with the Indian Community, and be sensitive to the Indian culture and its needs.

Responsibilities

  • Arrive on-time and ready to work.
  • Greet and welcome patients at the time they enter the laboratory. Displays excellent customer service communication skills with patients, managers, and staff.
  • Answer telephone calls in a timely and professional manner; return /forward incoming telephone calls/messages as appropriate and in a timely manner.
  • Professional and proper fitting work attire; well groomed; excellent hygiene.
  • Verifies the patient’s identification. Prepare and explain the specimen collection procedure to patients and answer any questions about the process.
  • Ensures patient test specimens meet laboratory requirements for specimen collection, storage, transport, and processing timeframes.
  • Utilize appropriate personal protective equipment when collecting patient specimens.
  • Perform venous access procedures on adult and pediatric patients using vacutainer collection devices, winged butterfly collection devices, and standard needle and syringe with minimal to no complications.
  • Perform capillary access procedures on adult, pediatric, and infant patients using fingerstick or heel stick devices.
  • Obtains throat or nasal swab specimens from adult and pediatric patients.
  • Performs selected CLIA waived tests and report results.
  • Must show concern and understanding while promoting the comfort and well-being of the patient during blood collection process.
  • Efficiently process specimens for the reference laboratory; clerical duties include accessing laboratory orders, printing specimen labels, and approving laboratory results.
  • Complete daily and monthly quality controls logs; enter clear and legible documentation in any records.
  • Stock and rotate lab supplies; keep track of low supplies and inform laboratory manager (or designee) of low supply stock and/or order supplies as needed.
  • Follow all health guidelines; safety protocols and procedures to maintain sanitary workstations and laboratory. Ensure laboratory is HIPAA compliance with patient information.
  • Detail-oriented and committed to ensure patient confidentiality.
  • Travel to and work at other RSBCIHI lab sites as staffing needs require.
  • Respond to patient emergencies in the laboratory; request medical staff assistance as needed (e.g., fainting/vasovagal events).
  • Other duties as assigned.
