PGY1 General Surgery Residents at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine at Holy Cross Hospital participate in structured programs to develop skills in all six of the general competencies as outlined by the ACGME. Each resident must demonstrate basic competency in these areas. In this role, the General Surgery Resident assists with admissions, consultations, evaluations, diagnosis, pre-operative care, surgical treatment, and post-operative care of patients. These programs run concurrently in their rotation assignments but often involve patient experience on their assigned clinical rotations. JOB FUNCTIONS 1. Department Specific Functions Patient Care 1) Coordinate patient care among all members of the health care team 2) Performs admission, consultation, evaluation, diagnosis, surgical treatment, pre-operative care and post-operative care of patients with general surgical problems 3) Manage patients appropriately based on available evidence, sound judgment, and patient preferences 4) Formulate diagnostic and surgical treatment plans independently 5) Use information technology to support patient care decisions 6) Identifies the need for patient education and orders or provides education Medical Knowledge 1) Develop an advanced understanding of disease states 2) Demonstrate the skill of reading and interpreting the medical literature 3) Develops and maintains a personal program of self-study 4) Efficiently performs in emergency situations 5) Demonstrates applied knowledge base including integration of skills as required through rotation experiences Practice-Based Learning and Improvement 1) Gain competence in bedside teaching 2) Demonstrates the ability for effective problem identification and resolution as well as the exercise of independent judgment 3) Demonstrates dexterity and competency to perform essential and required procedures and provides complete written documentation of all procedures Interpersonal and Communication Skills 1) Sustain a therapeutic relationship with patients 2) Demonstrates awareness and sensitivity to patient and family issues, including age, gender and cultural diversity 3) Present topics informally and formally to groups of learners 4) Develop skills to negotiate 5) Use effective and appropriate non-verbal communications with patients and colleagues Professionalism 1) Establish a sense of responsibility for a patient population 2) Manage and direct a health care team 3) Develop conflict management skills 4) Work with consultants and other health care teams 5) Comprehensively documents in patients’ charts in a timely and accurate manner Systems-Based Practice 1) Work with ancillary team members to provide high quality, cost effective health care 2) Demonstrates awareness and applies knowledge of quality control measures and risk management skills.
