About The Position

Routinely performs all of the duties of a home infusion pharmacist but also utilizes a large amount of their assigned work time to a specialty area within the pharmacy that provides direct support or training for other staff. This pharmacist would routinely manage IV patient therapies both in home and in the infusion suite. This position often requires odd work schedules, off site meetings, on-call time and weekend shifts in order to maintain software systems while not disrupting departmental operations.

Requirements

  • Five year bachelor of science degree in pharmacy from an accredited college of pharmacy.
  • Specialist in one or more areas of expertise within the pharmacy such as pharmacy software maintenance, hardware upkeep, training of pharmacy personnel or communication with outside technical departments (TIS).
  • Current registered pharmacist license and controlled substance license issued by the Michigan State Board of Pharmacy.
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification may be required (at discretion of manager).

  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Knowledge of USP 797 and USP 800.
  • Familiarity with standard desktop and windows based computer system, including email, e-learning, intranet and computer navigation.
  • Ability to use other software required to perform essential functions.
  • Repetitive use of hands and fingers (e.g., preparing IV admixtures, use of a computer keyboard).
  • May require lifting and carrying light loads (up to 40 lbs.), including boxes, equipment, unit dose-cassettes, and IV solutions and stooping or kneeling (e.g., to pick up items from the floor, to remove and replace items on lower shelves, and to file documents in lower file drawers).
  • Sitting, walking, or standing for long periods of time (4-8 hours) is often necessary.
  • Must be able to physically operate the equipment for the job.

  • Advanced training in their area of specialty.

Responsibilities

  • Reviews, prepares and dispenses medication orders per physician order or prescription according to established policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Ensures safe, appropriate, cost effective medication therapies for patients according to established policies, procedures and protocols.
  • Contributes to the quality and effective operation of the department.
  • Provides clinical consultation and clarification to practitioners. Suggests appropriate, cost-effective therapeutic alternatives to physicians, as needed.
  • Provides drug information and counseling to patients, families, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Participate in the training, education, precepting, and evaluation of pharmacy students and/or residents as assigned.
  • Provides work direction to pharmacy support personnel, verifies the daily activities of pharmacy technicians.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
