Requirements

  • High School graduate or Equivalence certificate required
  • Language skills – basic communication skills such as the ability to read and interpret memos, operating instruction and procedure manuals. Must be able to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to peers, customers, supervisors and other employees.
  • Data entry – perform accurate data entry, operate a computer and learn computer applications specific to the department.
  • Mathematical skills – calculate doses using ratios, proportions and algebra.
  • Fluent knowledge of medication brand and generic names required
  • Proficiency in the technical skills used in pharmacy practice.
  • Must display the core values (CARES) of Glens Falls Hospital at all times.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior Pharmacy Technician experience preferred
  • Pharmacy Technician National Certification (e.g.: CPhT or ExCPT) and New York State registration required with in 1 year of hire date (exceptions can be made for per diem employees)
  • Prior experience with Omnicell, Cerner, RX30 or other similar programs preferred.
  • Understanding of medical terminology preferred.
  • Previous experience with Microsoft Office or other word processing software preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Interpret computer generated fill lists and loads in conjunction with Carousel dispensing technology to provide the appropriate medication, dosage, form, strength, size, and quantity for distribution to designated automated dispensing cabinets (ADCs) once work is verified by a Pharmacist. Assists the Pharmacist in the timely dispensing of STAT medications. Generate ADC product activity reports (e.g.: current orders, usage, etc.). Performs monthly inspections. Puts away daily orders.
  • Refills and loads ADCs using computer generated fill lists and bar code scanning technology once a pharmacist verifies all fills. Refills all kits, both emergent and non-emergent (e.g.: Cath lab trays and Code Cart trays), for pharmacist verification in accordance with department procedures. Restocks, while assuring stock rotation, supplies to maintain pre-determined inventory par levels.
  • Delivers patient specific medications, once verified by a Pharmacist, to patient care areas in a safe, efficient, and timely manner. Follows all HIPAA privacy regulations.
  • Re-packages bulk medications into unit dose form either manually or with a unit-dose packaging machine. Prepares proper re-packaging documentation for Pharmacist verification in accordance with all Federal and State laws.
  • Facilitate controlled substance distribution, after verification by a pharmacist, through the use of a controlled substance vault and integration of the ADC system including documenting all transfers. Participates in ADC and controlled substance vault discrepancy resolution. Assist in avoiding drug diversion and assists in meeting all State and federal laws pertaining to controlled substance documentation, reporting and record keeping requirements.
  • Evaluates safety and storage compliance against standards and documents findings with nursing and Pharmacists to ensure the proper storage of medications.
  • Generates patient specific charges using the Pharmacy computer system to ensure timely posting of medication charges.
  • Interpret floor stock requisitions; enter in remote ordering system, select items from inventory using Carousel technology and bags and delivers to respective units after verification by a Pharmacist. Edits documents and issues items to appropriate cost centers in the computer system to ensure proper inventory levels in patient care areas.
  • Answers telephones and responds to customers to provide efficient service.
  • Performs other duties as necessary to respond to changing departmental needs and priorities.
