About The Position

The Pharmacy Technician II assists in preparing, packaging, delivering and charging of medications under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist. Completes established competencies for the position within designated introductory period. Other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • MINIMUM EDUCATION: High School Graduate or equivalent; accredited training in sterile products preparation.
  • MINIMUM EXPERIENCE : Pharmacy experience
  • REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURE: Possession of current Texas State Board of Pharmacy Technician License; Pharmacy Technician Certification (depending on state regulations) required. IV Certification.

Nice To Haves

  • PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: Two years hospital experience

Responsibilities

  • Accurately fills medication orders with correct strength, dosage form, and quantity in a timely manner.
  • Assures all medications are checked by a pharmacist prior to dispensing.
  • Responds appropriately to requests for STAT orders, routine orders, department requests and ADC stock out bulletins.
  • Refills emergency crash carts, boxes and kits accurately and timely.
  • Accurately stock ADCs in a timely manner.
  • Prepackages and labels oral medications and extemporaneous preparations.
  • Prepares IV sterile admixture solutions and IV products accurately consistent with IV policies and procedures.
  • Restocks medications in IV room and conforms to IV cleaning schedule
  • Performs distribution duties and adhere to pharmacy technician operational workflow and delivery schedule
  • Interprets medication labels to compounds, prepares and maintains records of transactions.
  • Prepares outpatient prescriptions for review by pharmacist
  • Prepares unit dose tablets capsules and liquids, and surgical drugs and other specialty drug trays
  • Assists the pharmacist with the dispensing of controlled substances to patient care areas and maintains records
  • Maintain adequate medication stock levels and proper storage of medications
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Performs and prepares IV admixture, chemotherapy and parental nutrition accurately consistent with IV policies and procedures (USP797 and USP800)
  • Reports suspected adverse drug reactions and medication occurrences.
  • Recommends improvement in pharmacy or facility processes that will decrease the potential for adverse outcomes.
  • Follow proper process for handling of controlled substances and report any variances to Supervisor or pharmacist-in-charge, m)
  • Ensure patient accounts are properly charged.
  • Performs inspections of nursing unit floor stock and pharmacy stock to insure security, potency of medications and removes expired medications from stock.
  • Assists the pharmacists in the provision of pharmaceutical care.
  • Maintains formulary and cost savings by minimizing non-formulary procurements and utilizing courier services unless indicated for immediate patient care.
  • Assists with report generation and information retrieval.
  • Participates in and performs activities that support the medication use process.
  • Interacts with nursing staff to facilitate pharmacy services.
  • Maintains stock in automated dispensing units at adequate levels and performs inventory and ordering functions.
  • Performs daily billing and charge functions as required, recognizing errors when they arise.

  • Comply with state and federal regulatory requirements, Joint Commission standards and Tenet and hospital policies and procedures notify Pharmacist/Supervisor of any deviations from standards.
