About The Position

The Phlebotomist will provide medical services to Adults in Custody (AIC) referred to by the Health Services Department at FCC-Pollock. Services rendered should be professional in nature and consistent with community standards of care. The Phlebotomist shall adhere to all applicable federal, state, and local regulations during the performance of duties.

Requirements

  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Must have completed a Phlebotomy, Medical Assistant, Licensed Practical Nurse, Certified Nursing Assistant, and/or Emergency Medical Technician course of study; a completion diploma is required.
  • Applicants must have a minimum of one (1) year of experience with basic laboratory and phlebotomy skills.
  • Have experience with specimen collection, packaging, and shipment to referral laboratories with knowledge of maintaining appropriate records.
  • Must be Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certified either by the American Red Cross (ARC)or the American Heart Association (AHA).
  • Three (3) letters of reference.

Nice To Haves

  • Bilingual oral communication skills and experience in a clinical correctional setting are desirable but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Collect blood and urine samples and prepare and track all laboratory samples.
  • Assist the Physician, Physician Assistant, and/or Nurse with patient flow in a clinic setting by measuring patients' vital signs and weight and scanning laboratory results in the Bureau Electronic Medical Record (BEMR).
  • Organize, schedule, and perform laboratory studies, specimen collection, and processing within the Health Service Unit, including A&O in-processing, DNA processing per procedure, vaccine programs, and PPD updates.
  • Prepare and ensure specimens are packed and transported according to the contract or Bureau of Prisons (BOP) Reference Laboratory guidelines and document the process per Health Services Unit Laboratory Procedures.
  • Ensure that lab requests are completed accurately and that all reports are returned from the contract lab.
  • Notify the provider, update the log as received, follow up appropriately, and file or scan the results in the lab and medical record.
  • Acquire and maintain knowledge of the Health Services Manual and Unit Procedures necessary to accomplish the mission described herein, ensuring that the Laboratory Procedure Manual is updated accordingly.
  • Complete and scan into BEMR the Medical Treatment Refusal forms for any Adults in Custody (AIC) who wish to refuse laboratory testing ordered by clinical staff.
  • Organize, schedule, and perform laboratory studies, specimen collection, and processing within the Health Service Unit, to include A&O in-processing, DNA per procedure, and vaccine programs.
  • Ensure that lab requests are appropriately completed and all reports are returned from the contract lab, the provider is notified, log results as received, follow up appropriately, and file results in the lab and medical record.
  • Assist the Health Service Administrator (HSA) or his/her designee in the coordination of BOP and Contract Reference Lab contact, ACLIA re-certification, maintenance of equipment, and notification of needed supplies.
  • Assist the HSA and Clinical Director with writing and implementing policies that deal with the laboratory program.
