About The Position

The Planning internship offers insight and practical knowledge related to multiple facets within the planning profession including, current planning, community development, transportation, and other long-range planning topics. Interns will work on various planning projects including action items related to the Leland 2045 Comprehensive Plan and provide support to a team of planners on their respective projects. They will also assist staff in collecting and preparing data for said projects and may be expected to attend meetings and present findings to the Planning team as well as Town Boards.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must be currently enrolled in 2 or 4-year degree programs with relevant degree paths
  • Must be able to work a minimum of eight hours a week.
  • Must pass a background investigation and pre-employment drug screening.
  • Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina.
  • General knowledge of business English, spelling, and arithmetic.
  • Ability to operate general office equipment.
  • Ability to complete projects within timelines and pay attention to detail.
  • Ability to research, collect, organize and analyze data and to prepare technical reports.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to deal courteously with the public.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, medical personnel, court personnel and the general public.

Responsibilities

  • Provides support to a team of Planning and Inspections staff
  • Assists staff in collecting and preparing data for various projects
  • Conducts field work, collects parcel data and searches land records
  • Prepares maps and planning reports of limited or variable complexity
  • Produces sketches and renderings of limited or variable complexity
  • Assists planning staff at public meetings
  • Presents report findings at team and board meetings
  • Conducts basic office functions as needed, such as data entry, file management, and customer service
  • Works on special and long-term projects in planning areas such as long-range, transportation, environmental, economic, and community development
