Under direct supervision of the job site superintendent or other designated individual, the Plumber 1 in the Commercial Plumbing Division must be able to follow written and verbal directives from a supervisor. The Plumber 1 (L1) is an entry-level plumber position within the Commercial Plumbing Division. The incumbent may also be responsible for performing the duties of a helper, i.e. cleaning and preparing the job site, loading and delivering materials, and using a variety of hand tools and machinery, both manual and electric, i.e. hole hawg, hammer drill, chipping hammer, power drills, grinders, saws, pressure washers, levels and a tape measure. The Commercial Plumber 1 may also be responsible for performing duties of the Apprentice when needed. The Plumber 1 (L1) must have at least 4 years of plumbing experience and able to demonstrate proficiency as a Commercial Plumbing Plumber 1. The Plumber 1 (L1) must be able to read plumbing and architectural plans and assemble a materials list. The Plumber 1 (L1) must also be able to install underground and aboveground DWV/Domestic Water piping systems. The Plumber 1 (L1) must also be able to lead/train other employees such as helpers and apprentices. Duties and responsibilities Commercial Plumber Level 1 Under direct supervision of either the job site superintendent or other designated individual, the Plumber 1 (L1) must be able to follow written and verbal directives from the supervisor. Must be willing and able to perform physical labor as directed by superintendent or another designated individual. The Plumber 1 (L1) is a 1st-Tier Plumber in the Commercial Plumbing Division. The Plumber 1 (L1) must know how to read/interpret plumbing/architectural plans and possess a complete understanding of the plumbing system and able to: Locate possible utilities that are known/unknown within the excavation site Properly grade a ditch line for sewer, storm, or domestic water Properly install below grade (following local/state codes): PVC Sewer System PVC Storm System Service Weight Cast Iron Storm/Sewer System Mechanical Joint Domestic Water Piping System Solvent Weld PVC or CPVC Piping System Copper Piping Soldered or Brazed Operate hand tools such as shovels and tamps, as well as small power-operated compaction machines such as plate tamps and jumping jacks. Backfill and Compaction: Placement of earth materials in the excavation after the plumbing piping has been installed. Properly install above grade (following local/state codes): PVC Drain, waste and Vent System PVC Storm System No-Hub Cast Iron Drain, Waste and Vent System No-Hub Cast Iron Storm System CPVC Solvent Weld Piping Systems Copper Sweat or Pro-Press Piping Systems Operate cutting tools, such as core drill machines (floor mounter or hand-held), Corded or battery-operated saws, drills and hole hawgs for penetrations through footers, floors, ceilings, and walls. Operate Drilling tools and hand-held tools for mounting supports for any above grade piping horizontal or vertical. Operate a caulk gun for fire penetrations and finished fixtures Properly install the following fixtures (following local/state codes): All variations of floor mounted and wall hung water closets All variations of wall hung and floor mounted Urinals All variations of wall hung lavatories All variations of counter-top sinks All variations of Tub/Shower Units Wall Hung/Floor Mounted Water Coolers All variations of janitorial service sinks Residential and commercial dishwashers Properly Install the following Equipment (following local/state codes): All sizes of residential and small commercial water heaters Floor Drains, floor clean-outs, and floor sinks above and below grade Water closet carriers, Lavatory Carriers and Urinal Carriers Commercial Ice Makers Air Compressors Be able to provide the supervisor a detailed list of materials needed daily and as much as up-to a week in advance. The Plumber 1 (L1) works directly for the superintendent on the job but will work in conjunction with and take direction from the Plumber 2 on the job. The Plumber 1 (L1) may be called upon to encumber the duties of a helper/apprentice to unload materials, layout tools and materials, pick-up a job site, and hand dig ditches. The incumbent should have their own hand tools of the trade and is responsible for up-keep of their own tools.
