DEFINITION To perform a variety of duties in the enforcement of laws and the prevention of crimes; to control traffic flow and enforce State and local traffic regulations; to perform investigation activities; and to perform a variety of technical and administrative tasks in support of the Police Department. SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED Receives general supervision from supervisory staff. Exercises no supervision. In the absence of a supervisor the senior patrol officer will exercise supervision of the shift. ESSENTIAL AND MARGINAL FUNCTION STATEMENTS - Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: Essential Functions: Patrol a designated area of the city to preserve law and order, discover and prevent the commission of crimes; enforce traffic and other laws and ordinances; take proactive measures to deter the commission of crime; conduct undercover activities to gather intelligence about the conduct of crime or criminal activities. Investigate crimes; gather and preserve evidence; interview victims, complainants and witnesses; identify and interrogate suspects; apprehend and arrest offenders; present evidence and testify in court. Respond to general public service calls and complaints including domestic disturbances, civil complaints, property control, automobile accidents, robberies, and related misdemeanor and felony incidents. Enforce traffic laws and ordinances; check speed with radar; issue warnings and citations. Direct traffic at fires, special events and other emergency or extraordinary incidents. Conduct traffic accident analyses and general traffic surveys; conduct investigations of serious injury and fatal traffic accidents. Contact and cooperate with other law enforcement agencies in matters relating to the apprehension of offenders and the investigation of offenses. Prepare reports on arrests made, activities performed, and unusual incidents observed. Maintain custody of prisoners; transfer prisoners to holding facility. Maintain contact with citizens regarding potential law enforcement problems and preserve good relationships with the general public; take an active role in areas of public education relative to crime and crime prevention; make public presentations as assigned. Respond to and resolve difficult and sensitive citizen inquiries and complaints. Perform duties of dispatcher in their absence. Relieve dispatcher during break time. Perform matron duties as needed. Marginal Functions: Confer with citizens and city officials on law enforcement problems; assist in the development of innovative policies regarding municipal law enforcement. Ensure responsive, appropriate service delivery by representing the department and conferring with civic, professional, service, fraternal and other community groups. Review and analyze reports, legislation, court cases, and related matters; prepare the initial responses for legal actions. Perform a variety of special projects as assigned. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
