About The Position

The National Urban League seeks a Policy Associate, to join the Washington Bureau team. This role will report directly to the Vice President, Federal Affairs, and support advocacy efforts across multiple policy areas, including technology and telecommunications, social justice, health, education, labor, and workforce development. This role provides research, policy analysis, and administrative support to advance the National Urban League’s mission of economic empowerment and social justice for Black and underserved communities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in public policy, political science, or a related field
  • 1-3 years of experience in policy analysis, legislative affairs, or advocacy. Capitol Hill or nonprofit experience is a plus. Internship or fellowship experience will be considered.
  • Knowledge of Capitol Hill and federal legislative and regulatory processes.
  • Prior experience researching and analyzing legislative language.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Collaborative style, detailed–oriented and should enjoy working on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent organizational ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must be a self-directed leader and a collaborative team member.
  • Must know Microsoft 365
  • 25% travel required
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with not-for-profit organization is strongly preferred.
  • Capitol Hill or nonprofit experience is a plus.
  • Internship or fellowship experience will be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Track, analyze, and summarize legislative and regulatory developments across multiple policy areas.
  • Draft policy briefs, fact sheets, talking points, and public comment letters to support advocacy efforts.
  • Conduct research on key policy issues, including broadband access, civil rights, healthcare equity, education reform, and workforce development.
  • Engage with policymakers, coalition partners, and advocacy organizations to support NULWB’s policy priorities.
  • Assist in planning and coordinating policy events, briefings, and roundtables.
  • Support the preparation of testimony, public statements, and advocacy campaigns.
  • Contribute to the Washington Bureau’s communications strategy by drafting blog posts, social media content, and advocacy materials.
  • Provide logistical and administrative support for task forces, working groups, and legislative initiatives.
