The Vehicle Technology Assessment (VTA) Group within the Vehicle and Mobility Systems at Argonne National Laboratory is seeking to hire a postdoctoral appointee to assess vehicle technologies to quantify energy consumption, performance and cost benefits. In this role, a successful candidate will perform vehicle modelling and simulation of advanced powertrains to quantify the impacts of new component technologies, control algorithms and powertrain architectures with focus on advanced technologies. The candidate will assist on projects to benchmark next generation vehicle systems, identify opportunities for improvement, and/or analyze their impacts at individual, regional and national level. The candidate will also be tasked to develop new ideas into projects under the supervision of more experienced researchers. Current project opportunities include quantifying the impact of advanced vehicle technologies applicable to light duty, medium duty and heavy-duty vehicles, hybrid, battery electric and fuel cell powertrain design, development of supervisory control logic, validation of vehicle models against test data etc. The projects and interests of this group span all modes of transportation including off-road, rail & marine applications too. These projects involve close collaboration with industrial and academic partners, and engagement with multidisciplinary project teams. Researchers are expected to communicate results through well-designed presentations, publish journal articles and reports, and present results at conferences, workshops, and project meetings. The ideal candidate should have technical experience in vehicles (on road, offroad, rail or marine) modelling, systems analysis, and techno-economic analysis of vehicle systems. Prior experience in carrying out simulations to support research and development in the above topics is desirable. The VTA Group supports DOE and other sponsors to assess the energy, cost and performance outcomes associated with specific technologies in order to guide R&D efforts, identify improvement opportunities. Researchers are responsible for supporting the PIs on their specific projects. They are expected to collaborate with experts from Argonne as well as in industry and at other national laboratories.
