Stony Brook University’s School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS) is seeking a postdoctoral scholar to lead a high-profile research project focused on understanding long-term trends in carbonate chemistry and ocean acidification in the New York Bight (NYB). The objectives, as outlined in detail below, will be to 1) assist in collection of new samples and data focused on various parameters relevant to ocean acidification during at least three cruises per year, 2) evaluate these new along with previously collected seasonal cruise data (over numerous cruises since 2018) to determine long term trends in carbonate chemistry of the NYB, and 3) work with a team of Ecosystem and Climate Change Indicators experts to evaluate if and how OA might be affecting the biota associated with the NYB. Funding is provided by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC). More information about the New York Bight Indicators project can be found here: https://dec.ny.gov/nature/waterbodies/oceans-estuaries/ocean-action-plan/ocean-monitoring-projects/indicators-of-ocean-health This is planned as a 2-year position but has the potential for extension depending on performance and availability of funds.
