The Civil and Environmental Engineering Department of Carnegie Mellon University is seeking a Post-doctoral Researcher or Research Scientist specializing in environmental chemistry and/or nanochemistry This position is a great opportunity to develop necessary skills for a future faculty position. Requirements

  • PhD required
  • Demonstrated experience writing research proposals, mentoring graduate students, and publishing in high quality peer-reviewed journals.
  • Experience working with real environmental samples, (e.g. soils, plants, subaquatic sediments or similar matrices)
  • Effective English language oral and written communication skills are required
  • A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.

Nice To Haves

  • Strong laboratory skills and a working knowledge of other solid phase characterization methods for metals (e.g. XRD, FTIR, XPS, SEM/TEM, ICP-MS, spICP-TOF-MS) are also highly desirable
  • Experience performing industry-sponsored research is also desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Interact with an interdisciplinary research team of faculty, post-docs, graduate students, and industry collaborators on multiple environmental chemistry research project areas.
  • Assist the PI in proposal writing, student mentoring, publishing papers, exploring new research directions, and maintaining good industry-university relationships
  • Design and conduct experiments in one of these areas of research, prepare manuscripts and monthly research reports, and present findings at national and international professional conferences.
  • Other duties as assigned.
