Under the supervision of the Production Supervisor, the Powder Coating Operator is responsible for the proper use and care of the powder coating booth, applying powder paint to parts through the use of automated guns and manual spray, and maintaining a quality product.

Requirements

  • Basic computer skills including Excel, & web-based applications to enter data regularly and accurately.
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Must be flexible and be able to respond with a positive attitude to changing demands and conditions.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate with many areas of the plant/company during meetings, presentations, and various conversations on and off the floor.
  • Attention to detail and understand/adjusting to minor detail changes.
  • Ability to learn how to operate a forklift and other company vehicles.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior manufacturing, assembly, material movement, or powder coating operations experience preferred.
  • Ability to learn and understand the PLC operating screen and data output screens.
  • Understand your internal customer base (Sublimation Line, Assembly, and Crating).
  • Be customer oriented; possess the ability to react to the customers’ needs while following company procedures.
  • Direct knowledge and demonstrated understanding of Johnstown plant products and processes is preferred.
  • Knowledge of metal manufacturing materials, fabrication processes, and machinery preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Commit to and follow the facility Mission, Vision and Values that support the AWI Operating Principles as an individual and team.
  • Attend and participate in all required company training programs.
  • Operate all coating equipment including guns, hoppers, reclaim system, and booth collection system.
  • Operate machinery or stations as instructed by the Team Leader to meet scheduled demands.
  • Support the development of standard recipes for various parts or powders.
  • Ensure standard recipes are working as intended and verify that the settings do not need adjustments to improve the quality of the product or efficiency of the booth.
  • Reduce powder waste by learning the details on how the equipment functions.
  • Learn the effect of gun output, air quality, current, resistance, gun spacing/location, voltage, and part geometry on the quality and efficiency of application of powder.
  • Make appropriate running decisions to prevent excessive defects and/or downtime.
  • Develop a knowledge of pretreatment effect on the powder coating process as well as the cure oven effect on the painted product.
  • Keep accurate records of production, waste, quality checks undertaken.
  • Follow all Company, OSHA Safety, and EPA Environmental Policies.
  • Always ensures personal safe behavior and encourages safe behavior in others.
  • Participates in safety related events/trainings/processes.
  • Conform to all company policies and procedures.
  • Maintain clean and organized work area.
  • Proper cleaning and maintenance of equipment.
  • Report any safety/environmental incidents.
  • Maintain a high level of customer focus in producing quality products and services that do not sacrifice the safety of others, oneself, nor the environment.
  • Ensure that the standards for quality, output, safety etc. are adhered to and improved upon.
  • Troubleshoot issues that are within your knowledge and control.
  • Decide quickly to contact more resources for issues outside of your knowledge and control.
  • Check coating quality pre-cure using a variety of devices.
  • Monitor aspects of the booth that could affect the product quality using devices, standard work, and knowledge of the process.
  • Understand when a powder is of standard quality or of good quality vs when there is an issue that needs to be addressed.
  • Create and/or improve upon standard work processes including but not limited to: Start Up Shut Down While Running Change Overs Troubleshooting Downday Cost
  • Looks for projects or methods to reduce cost without sacrificing the quality of the parts .
  • Drive s waste out of operation .
