About The Position

The Building Systems Group at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is seeking a Senior Energy\Buildings Research Analyst to join our Residential & Commercial Building Program team; the individual will be a task\project leader and technical leader on a team of scientist, engineers, researchers, and analysts performing field validation test and evaluation of building systems including water heaters, HVAC systems and other systems. The position will support the development of innovative methods to analyze and assess the impact of technologies\systems associated with achieving greater efficiency, optimization, and resiliency of building systems and technologies under considerations of the environment. The position requires knowledge\experience related to building energy efficiency, commercial and residential building technologies and systems field research (new construction and retrofits) that includes development of test plans, procedures, data acquisition and sensor selection, and equipment installation. Experience leading/performing energy audits, applying analysis tools and models, and providing guidance for energy sustainability. Recognized expertise in statistical analysis and translating complex technical insights into strategies and plans for stakeholders. Experience engaging regional, state, and community organizations on energy and workforce related issues. The individual will provide leadership to project teams that serve as a technical resource and project planner\implementer for commercial and residential buildings technologies and systems field validation. The primary sponsor is the Department of Energy offices, and secondary sponsors include smaller agencies, state government, and private organizations. This position offers the opportunity for a broad range of involvement in building research and science projects. This individual is Senior level staff member who has a growing national reputation with specialization in at least one building related technical domain. Capable of making key contributions in setting technical direction. Developing and optimizing capabilities at the division level. Developing a strong and recognized external reputation. Experienced at building effective project teams with membership across a group, technical domain and/or directorate. Contributing to the laboratory through mentorship of junior staff and taking on operational assignments. The position: Will require strong technical capabilities and leadership associated with collecting, analyzing and reporting on field validation data. The team will rely on this position to design, execute, evaluate and report on field validation experiments with support from junior staff. Will work with sponsor relationship management, program managers, and the group leader to support and lead tasks that are required to be completed on time and within budget. There will be direct interface with sponsors and their subcontractors to gather data, and plan and implement activities. Will be responsible for presentation of program results to clients and others; from time to time, travel requirements may be as high as 25%. Will be expected to attend conferences and present results of work, as well as support energy storage education in public forums and via invited presentations.

Requirements

  • BS/BA and 9 years of relevant experience -OR-
  • MS/MA or higher and 7 years of relevant experience
  • Knowledge\experience related to building energy efficiency, commercial and residential building technologies and systems field research (new construction and retrofits) that includes development of test plans, procedures, data acquisition and sensor selection, and equipment installation.
  • Experience leading/performing energy audits, applying analysis tools and models, and providing guidance for energy sustainability.
  • Recognized expertise in statistical analysis and translating complex technical insights into strategies and plans for stakeholders.
  • Experience engaging regional, state, and community organizations on energy and workforce related issues.
  • Strong technical capabilities and leadership associated with collecting, analyzing and reporting on field validation data.
  • Strong, demonstrated writing skills and the ability to clearly and effectively present information in a public setting.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s or PhD degree with at least 10 years of relevant experience in building systems technologies performance testing, research, and field validation research.
  • Strong analysis skills and/or experience advance the understanding of energy storage technologies and best practices.
  • Demonstrated experience in residential or commercial buildings construction, operations, testing and/or research.
  • Demonstrated experience collaborating with DOE, building systems vendors, and regional, state or local government entities.
