AI Engineer - Designs, builds, and transitions AI prototypes—encompassing LLMs, RL, and traditional ML—into production-ready services. Creates end‑to‑end pipelines—cleaning data, writes integration code, tests and demonstrates prototypes to stakeholders. The role demands a blend of deep technical expertise, rigorous experimentation, and clear communication with stakeholders. This individual will ideally work a hybrid/onsite role at one of our Collins' domestic locations but remote is a possibility.

Requirements

  • Typically requires a University Degree and minimum 8 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 5 years of experience
  • U.S. citizenship U is required, as only U.S. citizens are authorized to access information under this program/contract
  • 2+ years experience with Python, or other languages (solving problems with code)
  • 1+ years experience with development practices - GitHub workflows, code‑review culture, VS Code use, and team‑board (GitHub, Jira, Teams Planner etc.).
  • 1+ years experience with using JSON, CSV, etc.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience applying cloud-based tooling (AWS or Azure)
  • Experience in fast‑paced applied R&D environments, stakeholder‑driven reviews, and iterative prototype refinement.
  • Experience with both structured and unstructured data.
  • Experience using large & small LLM models using APIs.
  • Experience making prototypes deployable.
  • Experience identifying & implementing ways to automate workflows using AI
  • Experience with AI/ML model design and implementation (when appropriate)
  • Experience with small AI models (that run on laptops) (e.g., gpt-oss20B, etc.) a plus
  • Experience combining non-agentic or agentic AI to knowledge graphs (LPGs or RDF)
  • Experience decomposing, breaking ambiguous goals into testable hypotheses. Identifying what must be solved now vs. later.
  • Ability to design and implement proof-of-concept prototypes for delivery into operational use.
  • Experience or awareness of AI approaches to mitigate GenAI hallucinations (e.g., neurosymbolic, etc.)
  • Ability to distill research literature or experimental findings into a prototype that meets stakeholder needs
  • Technical judgment, problem framing, execution, interpersonal influence, and organizational navigation
  • Participation in retrospectives, reflecting and sharing on successes and failures.
  • Experience as a Principal Investigator or lead engineer a plus
  • Ability to gain a security clearance a plus
  • GraphRAG experience a plus

Responsibilities

  • Write production‑grade python code and deploy scalable data‑processing jobs in AWS or Azure.
  • Pre-process data (tens of thousands of PDFs, hundreds of spreadsheets, etc.) and importing cleaned data into repositories of record for employee use.
  • Remain on the cutting edge of AI emerging patterns.
  • Demonstrate with business stakeholders to understand pain points and identify high-impact AI use cases.
  • Occasionally aid on proposal development as needed for the technical solution.
  • Design and develop scalable AI-powered pipelines to process and extract information from documents including PDFs, scanned images, and digital text.
  • Solve problems & issues that are numerous and undefined
  • Draft or review project statement of work for feasibility, time phasing, etc. and provide feedback to the Principle Investigator.
  • Help define progress in uncertain R&D work.
  • Containerize AI solutions.
  • Occasionally apply RAG (retrieval-augmented generation) as needed.
  • Balance supporting multiple prototype projects per year.
  • Must be willing and able to travel up to 10% of the time
