The Impact You Will Have As a Principal Engineer on the Digital Products team, you will be a senior technical leader helping shape the architecture and engineering excellence behind Coupe's member-facing digital experiences. Working closely with Product Owners and fellow engineers, you will contribute to the technical vision for our responsive web portal, native mobile applications, provider search platform, and healthcare financing interfaces—the digital touchpoints that make healthcare simple and transparent for our members. This is a hands-on role where you will write code, contribute to architectural decisions, and mentor engineers while partnering with Product to deliver innovative capabilities in a fast-moving market. Coupe has made significant investments in building owned digital assets, and you will be instrumental in evolving these platforms to support multi-tenant deployment models, real-time personalization, and seamless integration with our core benefits engine. Your technical expertise will directly enable Coupe's ability to scale, differentiate, and win in the Alternative Health Plan market.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of related professional experience. All relevant experience including work, education, transferable skills, and military experience will be considered.
  • Cloud Service Provider Certification (e.g., AWS Cloud Practitioner, Azure Fundamentals, etc.) – required within 1 year of employment
  • Demonstrated knowledge of digital platforms, tools, and processes
  • Demonstrated passion for building high quality technology solutions
  • Demonstrated experience in a technical leadership role
  • Demonstrated ability to come up with innovative, complete technology solutions to business needs
  • This job is on location at the BlueCross MN Eagan campus and may include on-call duties
  • High school diploma (or equivalency) and legal authorization to work in the U.S.

Nice To Haves

  • 10+ years of software engineering experience with at least 3 years in a principal, staff, or senior architect-level role
  • Deep expertise in modern frontend technologies including React, TypeScript, and responsive web design
  • Strong backend development skills with experience in Node.js, Python, or similar server-side technologies
  • Proven experience designing and building RESTful APIs and microservices architectures
  • Extensive hands-on experience with AWS services including Lambda, API Gateway, DynamoDB, S3, CloudFront, and event streaming (Kinesis, EventBridge, or similar)
  • Experience with native mobile development (iOS/Swift, Android/Kotlin) or cross-platform frameworks (React Native, Flutter)
  • Track record of collaborating effectively with Product and contributing to high-performing engineering teams
  • Strong understanding of CI/CD practices, infrastructure-as-code, and DevOps principles
  • Experience with authentication and authorization patterns including OAuth, OIDC, and identity federation
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience
  • Healthcare technology experience, particularly with consumer-facing health plan or benefits applications
  • Experience building provider search, directory, or marketplace applications with complex filtering and ranking requirements
  • Background in healthcare data including eligibility, claims, and provider information
  • Experience with GraphQL and modern API design patterns
  • Familiarity with healthcare compliance requirements including HIPAA, and experience implementing PHI protection in application architectures
  • Experience building multi-tenant SaaS platforms or white-label product architectures
  • Background in real-time personalization, recommendation systems, or AI-assisted user experiences
  • Experience with design systems, component libraries, and frontend architecture at scale
  • Knowledge of accessibility standards (WCAG) and experience building inclusive digital experiences
  • Experience with Salesforce Health Cloud or similar healthcare CRM platforms

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, code, and test of digital products.
  • Design, develop, configure, support AWS platform.
  • Lead system designs and technology platform decisions.
  • Keep abreast of industry trends and present findings to team, leadership, and stakeholders.
  • Mentor and and train fellow team members on technologies, design patterns, and best practices.
  • Participate on and lead agile teams of skilled developers / engineers, testers, and analysists.
  • Contribute to product development.
  • Continuous Integration / Continuous Deploy lifecycle.
  • Work closely with business stakeholders to plan product features, stories.
  • Work creatively and collaboratively with to ensure product usability, usefulness, feasibility, and cost effectiveness.
  • Ensure team members have tools, time, and resources they need to successfully deliver and support solutions.
