About The Position

Northwood Academy Charter School POSITION DESCRIPTION Position: K-8 Principal Department: Office of the CEO Reports To: Chief Executive Officer FLSA Status: Exempt Direct Reports: Assistant Principal K-4, Assistant Principal 5-8, Assistant Principal of Specialized Services, Social Work Supervisor, Classroom Teachers, Specialist Teachers (Art, Music, Health/Physical Education, STEM), Reading and Math Interventionists Position Summary: The Principal works collaboratively with the CEO to direct and support all members of the school staff to communicate effectively with parents, guardians, and families. The Principal oversees the day-to-day school operations handling disciplinary matters, hiring of teachers, and other personnel. The Principal serves as the education leader responsible for managing the policies, regulations and procedures to ensure all students are supervised in a safe learning environment that meets the approved curricula and mission of the school.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in education administration or a related field.
  • 5-8 years school leadership experience.
  • Active and valid Pennsylvania Principal K-12 certification.
  • 2-5 years teaching experience.
  • Required clearances.
  • Knowledge of curriculum, instructional methods, and strategies.
  • Knowledge of child development, learning, and behavior
  • Deep instructional knowledge of math and literacy.
  • Track record of coaching (not just evaluating) teachers.
  • Demonstrated experience closing achievement gaps, not just acknowledging them.
  • Understanding of culturally responsive teaching and discipline practices.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with school administration, staff, students, parents and other stakeholders.
  • Must have demonstrated experience in coaching teachers (beyond evaluation); using student data to drive instructional decisions.

Responsibilities

  • Systematically and collaboratively develop a positive culture to promote student growth and staff development.
  • Articulate and model a clear vision of the school’s culture that involves students, families, and staff.
  • Ensure that there are processes and systems in place for budgeting, staffing, problem solving, communicating expectations, and scheduling that result in organizing the work routines in the building.
  • Manage efficiently, effectively, and safely to foster student achievement.
  • Ensure that a Standards Aligned System is in place to address linkage of curriculum, instruction, assessment, data on student learning and teacher effectiveness based on research and best practices.
  • Manage, evaluate, and supervise effective and clear procedures for the operation and function of the school consistent with the philosophy, mission, values, and goals of the school. Ensure compliance with all laws, policies, and regulations.
  • Supervision of Assistant Principals: Includes weekly meetings to discuss teacher goals, classroom instruction, discipline tactics and techniques, incentives, and student/parent concerns.
  • Evaluate lesson plans, coordinate and conduct classroom observations to encourage the use of a variety of instructional strategies and materials consistent with research on learning and child growth and development.
  • Serve as disciplinarian support for Assistant Principals.
  • Assign and supervise lunch detention as needed.
  • File all required reports regarding violence, vandalism, attendance and discipline matters.
  • Establish schedules and procedures for the supervision of students in non-classroom areas (including before and after school).
  • Coordinate and participate in all School-wide activities. (i.e. STEM Night, Bingo, Spring/Winter concerts, plays and Physical Education events).
  • Oversee all committees and meetings.
  • Maintains good public relations with the community.
  • Work with the Community Coordinator to organize, administer, and direct student activities for the school community.
  • Communicate regularly with staff, parents, stakeholders, and vendors.
  • Support initiatives of all direct reports.
  • Interview and support the onboarding of teachers and substitute teachers.
  • Track attendance and performance of substitute teachers.
  • Plan and organize professional development sessions.
  • Coordinate and document peer observations.
  • Continue professional growth through activities such as continuing education coursework, workshops, and partnerships.
  • Tracking Formative and Summative Assessment Data.
  • Prepare for all Northwood meetings with CEO and/or members of the Leadership Team.
  • Coordinate, analyze, and review student achievement and behavior data to make informed curricular, scheduling and staffing decisions.
  • Communicate results to all stakeholders.
  • Use effective written and oral communication and presentation skills when addressing students, staff, parents, and the community.
  • Complete and maintain all records and reports in a timely manner.
  • Protect confidentiality of records and information.
  • Relevant duties assigned by the CEO.
