About The Position

At Bayer we’re visionaries, driven to solve the world’s toughest challenges and striving for a world where 'Health for all Hunger for none’ is no longer a dream, but a real possibility. We’re doing it with energy, curiosity and sheer dedication, always learning from unique perspectives of those around us, expanding our thinking, growing our capabilities and redefining ‘impossible’. There are so many reasons to join us. If you’re hungry to build a varied and meaningful career in a community of brilliant and diverse minds to make a real difference, there’s only one choice. Principal Scientist, Complex in Vitro Expert, CVRI Bayer has an opening for a Principal Scientist to join our Cardiovascular-Renal In Vitro Research group based at the Bayer Innovation Campus at the heart of Kendall Square in Cambridge, MA, with the goal to enhance internal expertise in the heart and kidney complex in vitro biology space. We are looking for a scientist with significant hands-on expertise in utilizing advanced cellular models, preferentially 3D organoid systems or organ-on-a-chip, to model cardiac and renal diseases in in vitro settings to enable the characterization of novel drug targets or therapeutic molecules. Specifically, the candidate will lead design and execution of experimental research studies, coach research associates and junior scientists, and serve as disease biology lead in therapeutics project(s) targeting cardiac or renal (including cardio-renal) disease. This is an excellent opportunity for a highly motivated candidate interested in exploring the early stages of drug development in a vibrant and collaborative atmosphere.

Requirements

  • A Ph.D. in Biology (Cellular, Molecular or Developmental Biology), Biochemistry, or related life science field is required.
  • A background in cardiorenal disease biology would be highly advantageous.
  • Demonstrated track record in the drug discovery process in a pharmaceutical or biotech setting, including strategic planning and project leadership.
  • Experience in the design and execution of early-stage research program(s) to identify and validate novel targets
  • Deep expertise in the application of state-of-the-art in vitro methods across the early drug discovery process (including molecular biology, biochemistry, and cellular analytical techniques).
  • Track record of working on complex scientific problems, and ability to integrate data from multiple disciplines.
  • Strong interpersonal, influencing, and collaboration skills to work in a team-oriented, matrix environment, and the ability to work through conflicts.
  • Must demonstrate outstanding personal initiative, and accountability, communication skills, and the ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Ability to adapt, prioritize activities to and effectively manage changes in a fast paced and dynamic environment
  • A passion for science and sense of urgency to find new medicines to benefit patients

Nice To Haves

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for leading multiple drug discovery programs, and contributing to initiatives, or collaborations in Research / Early Development (RED) CVRI from target identification through support of early clinical development.
  • In preclinical programs, act as disease biology lead ensuring excellence in biology sounding as well as alignment and timely delivery of pharmacology related deliveries to efficiently advance programs towards milestones and go/no go decisions, including concise and regular presentation of program results to senior stakeholders.
  • Design and supervise the execution of advanced cellular disease models (3D, organ-on-a-chip, bioengineered tissues, complex co-cultures) to support target identification, therapeutic candidate characterization, and mechanism of action evaluations utilizing internal and external resources (CROs) efficiently.
  • Support evaluation of external innovation landscape in the field of complex in vitro models and connection to external partners (CROs, academic partners).
  • Support BD&L assessment of external targets and programs to understand the competitive landscape and identify potential opportunities for collaboration or technological innovation.
  • Engage in close collaboration with scientists and technical staff of the Complex In Vitro Cluster based at the German sites to share knowledge, drive progress and stimulate innovation.
  • Contribute key documentation and presentations for projects moving through internal review stage gates and regulatory submissions.
  • Employing VACC (Visionary, Architect, Coach, Catalyst) leadership principles to support management and coaching of research associates and junior scientists in a global matrix organization.
  • Collaborate effectively with colleagues and interdisciplinary teams both within Bayer and with external collaborators.
