SummaryThis role supports plant production and reliability by providing process engineering support to operations and maintenance teams. The Process Engineer leads and supports projects to improve safety, efficiency, quality, and reliability of existing and new process systems, equipment, instrumentation, and materials.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from 4-year college or university (required)
  • 5+ years related experience in:
  • Chemical manufacturing, fertilizer, acid plants, or similar continuous process industry
  • Troubleshooting real plant equipment (reactors, absorbers, evaporators, scrubbers, etc.)

  • PSM experience is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and optimize day-to-day operation of assigned process units to improve throughput, energy efficiency, and product quality.
  • Provide technical troubleshooting support to Operations during upsets, abnormal conditions, and equipment failures, including root cause analysis and corrective action development.
  • Develop and maintain mass and energy balances, process flow diagrams (PFDs), and piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs) for assigned units.
  • Identify and implement process improvements to reduce variability, increase on-stream time, and minimize raw material, energy, and chemical losses.
  • Lead and support Management of Change (MOC) activities, including technical justification, risk assessment, and documentation updates.
  • Participate in Process Hazard Analyses (PHA/HAZOP), Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA), and incident investigations.
  • Define operating limits and control strategies for critical process variables and work with Process Control Engineers to implement control improvements.
  • Support capital and expense projects by developing scopes of work, equipment specifications, and bid packages; evaluating vendors; and supporting installation and commissioning activities.
  • Establish and track process performance indicators (KPIs) such as yield, conversion efficiency, emissions, and energy consumption.
  • Support environmental compliance by monitoring regulated parameters (SO₂, NOx, opacity, pH, fluoride, etc.) and assisting with permit reporting and corrective actions.
  • Work with Maintenance and Reliability teams to identify chronic equipment issues and define process-driven solutions (e.g., corrosion, fouling, scaling, erosion).
  • Develop and update operating procedures, startup/shutdown procedures, and training materials for operators.
  • Provide technical support for new product grades, raw material changes, and operating condition changes.
  • Assist with commissioning, startup, and performance testing of new or modified process systems.
  • Promote a strong safety culture by identifying process safety risks and supporting continuous improvement initiatives.
