The Team The American Express Design System saves teams time and resources by providing ready to use front-end components and design guidelines that bring consistency to the American Express customer journey. Containing over 300 components and styles, DS supports multiple frameworks and is looking to enhance their product offerings. Carefully maintained guidelines provide clear rules, as well as best practices to help teams adopt the design system and set the standard in design across the enterprise. By providing DS to the entire enterprise, we can dramatically improve teams’ strategic agility, speed to market, transparency, and the business value they drive. The library and guidelines are maintained by a team of designers, product managers, and engineers that are constantly working to evolve the library through user research, testing, and ideation. The Role As a designer on the DS team, you will help shape and scale our enterprise design system across complex web platforms. This role sits at the intersection of visual design, interaction design, accessibility, and systems thinking, and plays a critical role in enabling product teams to build consistent, high-quality digital experiences at scale. As a designer you will partner closely with engineering, product, product design teams, accessibility, and brand teams [DF1]to define, evolve, and inform use and implementation ofour web design system—balancing craft excellence with pragmatism in a large, multi-product ecosystem. As a member of the Design Systems team, you will be responsible for updating ant maintaining the library, as well as an advocate within the community ensuring proper usage of the system.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of product or UX design experience, with significant design systems work
  • Deep experience designing for web platforms in complex product ecosystems
  • Expert-level proficiency in Figma, especially for large, shared libraries, experience creating and maintaining complex symbols, tokens and libraries
  • Strong understanding and ability to create component-based design, responsive layouts, and interaction patterns
  • A portfolio that showcases your work, provides details of your project roles, and shows examples of component or system designs from inception through delivery
  • Experience working on customer-facing applications with focus on UI Design
  • Must have strong knowledge and experience with advising on WCAG
  • Knowledge of web implementation technologies (HTML, CSS, React). No coding required in this role, but you'll need the ability to articulate technical considerations of your designs to your developers
  • Must have strong organizational, technical and creative problem-solving skills
  • Must work well in a dynamic, complex environment and under deadline pressures
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Must have a team mindset and ability to take direction from leadership

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with Agile in JIRA/Airtable
  • Experience working across platforms is a plus (Native Mobile, Email)
  • Experience working with Lean UX
  • Motion design and animation skills a plus

Responsibilities

  • Creating and maintaining complex symbols, tokens, and libraries in Figma.
  • Creating and maintaining visual assets such as icons, flags and brand assets
  • Responsible for creating and maintaining documentation site and guidelines
  • Confidently and clearly communicate design decisions through presentations to peers, partners and cross-functional leadership, as well as host workshops, and create educational resources
  • Responsible for designing with an Accessibility first mindset. Must adhere to and be knowledgeable on WCAG guidelines in order to advise the community on internal digital policies as well as external best practices
  • Actively improve design processes and workflow for broader design organizations.
  • Collaborate closely with product managers, engineers, design leads and other cross-functional partners to define product requirements and deliver against them
  • Collaborate with global design, product, and engineering teams to drive UI pattern usage and to industry best practice standards to American Express
  • Responsible for strong communication skills and to be able to articulate design decisions internally and externally, self-governing and working autonomously
  • Actively engage with other designers to exchange ideas, share skills, and provide mentorship for teammates
